Hi Pat

Further to your PM and the info from Hastings Cemetery concerning your ancestor

Re William Acraman Monteagle

Records here at Hastings Cemetery show that the above was buried here on 12-2-1917, aged 78yrs.

A Retired Clergyman

Gravespace  Division L, Section C, Row D, No 24.  This is a Private Grave with Marble kerbs and was purchase  by Harold C W Ivimey.

this is all the information we hold, which I hope is of some help to you.

Well, I managed to get up to the cemetery today (was decorating the hallway, stairs and Landing over the weekend ready for the installation of a stair lift for my disabled wife) and after quite a bit of searching found what I though was the spot.

I could feel a surround with my foot underneath the grass that was completely covering any sign of a grave - so bent down and started to move the tufts of grass to see what was underneath

I found a coloured Marble surround with an inscription in Lead Letters and the word MONTEAGLE was staring up at me - pulling away a bit more grass I got his full name and date of death.

I will now go back up to the cemetery with a spade and some other tools to clear away all the overgrown grass and see if there is any further inscriptions on the other side of the surround.

Hope this meets with your approval

Hi again Pat

This is the picture I first took when I found the overgrown grave.

Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to tidy it up and make a transcription of it

Hi again Pat

Went up to the cemetery again today and dug out your grave site.

Because Hastings Cemetery is on the side of a hill, there has been a lot of erosion in the last 90 years (soil creep) and the kerb surround was some 8 inches down on one side.

Inscription was very simple and in excellent condition:

White Marble Surround
West Side:
"In Affectionate memory of"
South Side
"The Rev W A Monteagle who died February 8th 1917 Aged 78 Years".

Hope the above meets with your approval
