Thomas Rigby 1811, Claverley, Shropshire
« on: Wednesday 15 July 09 07:21 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find records of my g/g/grandfather, Thomas Rigby, who was born 1811 in Claverley. I believe he married Mary Unk  in 1835. I have census information of the family from 1851 onwards living in Wolverhampton.
I would like to know any information on him and his parents if possible.
 Thankyou.

This is a bit difficult as they were married pre 1837 and unless you can look up parish records for the marriage ( which will hopefully have Fathers names) you are a little stuck.

Having said that there are 4 Christenings on the IGI at Familysearch 1809-1813 that could be your Thomas.

My favourite of the 4 would be;
Thomas RIGBY
09 November 1809, Wellington, Shropshire
Parents JOHN and SARAH

As Thomas and Mary named 2 of their first children John and Sarah it seems to fit.
As I say this is just a supposition on my part and would need to be confirmed if possible.

Also on 1871 Census Thomas is down as born Wellington and is living in the area.

Also,
1841 Census;
Wellington, Shropshire
HO107/907/5/Wellington

Thomas RIGBY, 25
Mary, 24, not born in county
Sarah, 5
Emma, 3
Martha, 9mths

Another possible confirmation/coincidence is if you click on the batch no. Thomas Rigby, parents John and Sarah has a sibling ENOCH, born 1812.

Cheers,
Trish

Hi Trish,
Thanks for your reply.
My Thomas was about 7 years older than Mary. The childrens names you mention are the same as my family.
I really need a look at the Parish records to be sure.
Thankyou once again for your reply.
Irene

Hi Irene,

Dont worry about the age difference in 1841 census I posted. Quite often they were years out particularly in the 1841 as ages were rounded down. The girls ages are perfect though as they are 10yrs older in 1851 census. I am sure it is the same family.  Mary is not born in County (have amended post) I followed Thomas through 1851/61/71 Census as well and everything matches up.

1841, born in County abt 1816
1851, born in Manwaren abt 1811
1861, born in Claverley abt 1811
1871, born in Wellington abt 1808
1881, born Mannerly, abt 1806

Best of luck with Parish Records,
Cheers,
Trish

Hi,

In the transcribed copy of the Claverley Parish Registers 1568 - 1837 (as transcribed by the Shropshire Parish Register Society) there isn't a single entry for the name RIGBY in the index.
Had there been, I would have expected the record to be on the IGI.

To Trish and Gwynne,
Thankyou for your information.

I know census information is not always correct, which makes it hard to pinpoint the right people. I think you may be right, that the Thomas is "my" Thomas. Mary was born in Derbyshire, though not quite sure where.

Thankyou Gwynne for looking up parish records for me. Looks like I have drawn  a blank with Claverley.

Irene

Thomas Rigby is my great great grandfather his daughter Leah is my great grandmother.  My research shows he married Mary Thompson on 10th November 1834 at Sedgley in Staffordshire, this is on IGI his surname is spelt RIGBEY, this would be why quite a number of his children were born in Staffordshire including Leah.

I would enjoy exchanging information with you.
