Beese, 1861 lookup request to confirm parents
« on: Sunday 27 February 05 12:09 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for confirmation of the parents for my 2 x great grandmother.  Her name is Emma or Emily Beese and she was born around 1853 in Bristol, possibly St George or Hanham area.  Here are a few of the entries I already have for her:

1871 England Census
Emily Beese 14  Hanham, Gloucestershire, England Servant  Bitton  (Shown as a General Domestic Servant)
Anne Wride 7  St George, Gloucestershire, England Daughter  Bitton
Caroline Wride 24  St George, Gloucestershire, England Wife  Bitton
Elizabeth Wride 2  Hanham, Gloucestershire, England Daughter  Bitton
Henry Wride Jr. 26  St George, Gloucestershire, England Head  Bitton
John Wride 5  St George, Gloucestershire, England Son  Bitton  Gloucestershire

Note in 1871 young Emily/Emma is living with the Wride family headed by Henry Wride, who is the older brother of Jabez, who she later marries.

England and Wales, Civil Registration Index: 1837-1983
BEESE, Emma 1876 December Marriages Keynsham Gloucestershire Somerset
WRIDE, Jabez 1876 December Marriages Keynsham

In the 1901 census her family is living next door to an elderly couple called Beese, Emma's maiden name.  Are these her parents?
1901 England Census
George Beese 86  Bristol, St George Head  Bristol  Gloucestershire
Mary Beese 70  Bristol, St George Wife  Bristol  Gloucestershire

I would like to know in the 1861 census if Emma or Emily is shown as the daughter of George and Mary Beese, born at about the right time.

I had orignally posted this on the Gloucestershire board, but I was told that in the 1891 census, these area would be under Somerset, so I hope someone here will have access to the right records or will know where to refer me on.

Thanks in advance for all help.

Hi there
I've had a look around for your Emily Beese and the only one I can up with was born in St George in 1850 (GRO Ref Births Jun1850 Clifton Vol 11 p289)
In 1851 Census she can be found in St George Bristol HO107/1953 Two Mile Hill
Ambrose Beese 39 Stone Cutter b Oldland Gloucs
Hester               40 Pin Header    b St George
William Brain son in law U 18 Scholar b St George
Amelia Beese     daur 3                               "
Emily      "             "     1                               "

By 1861 this family has moved to Jeffries Hill Hanham
RG9/1698 Fo 105 p22
Ambrose Beese 48 Mason b Hanham Gloucs
Hester                51 Mason's wife b St Georges Gloucs
William                 18 Mason's son      "
George                 8 Scholar                "
Amelia                  13 Factory girl    b Hanham

They are still there in 1871 Ambrose 57 Hester 60 Amelia 23 and George 18

Sometimes the ages given on census returns can be incorrect so I thought I would pass this on to you just in case.

There are some other Beese families in Hanham but none seem to correlate to your George + Mary and Emily isn't there at all. Presumably she could be in service elsewhere by this time.

Looking at George Beese Market gardener he seems to have been married a few times in his life if I have the correct man.?

Please get back to me if you think any of this info is worth persuing.
regards

Wow, thanks for that.  Yes I am sure it must be the right family becasue of the Jefferies Hill link - all of the side of the family she married into lived in or around Jefferies Hill.

I'm so glad because she is my 2 x great grandmother, so now you have been able to supply the names of her parents for me, my 3 x great grandparents, another link completed.

I wonder though if the old couple called Beese she lives next door to in 1901 are her aunt and uncle.  George Beese born abt 1815 and her father Ambrose born 1813 could be brothers, both from St George.  I see you say George is a Market Gardener, another link to others in my tree living in the same area and in the same occupation.

Thanks so much for your help on that, I'm really grateful.
