help with Llandewi Abergweseyn
« on: Thursday 23 July 09 20:10 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Hopefully I'm at the right place!  I'm trying to find details of baptism of ancestor Thomas Davies who was born at a place called Ty'n y graig which was in the tywi valley, Llanddewi Abergeswyn.
He was born circa 1819 with father David Davies, suppose the earliest written doc. would be
1841 census? can anyone help with a lookup, or does anyone have details of registers of births for that area.  I believe Ty'n y graig may have been a farm.

Thanks in anticipation

1841 census for Tynygraig has a Jones family living there - HO107/1365/7 folio 5 pg 4
Llanddewi Abergwesyn comes under Llanfihangel Abergwesyn for 1841 - all 3 pages of it - it's tiny!
Cornwall: Allen, Bevan, Bosisto, Carnpezzack, Donithorn, Huddy, James, Retallack, Russell, Vincent, Yeoman
Cards: Thomas (Llanbadarn Fawr)
Glam: Bowler, Cram, Galloway, James, Thomas, Watkins
Lincs: Coupland, Cram
Mon: Cram, Gwyn, John, Philpot, Smart, Watkins
Pembs: Edwards (St. Dogmael's)
Yorks: Airey, Bowler, Elliott, Hare, Hewitt, Kellett, Kemp, Stephenson, Tebb

osprey,

thanks for the reply and confirming that Tyn y graig is actually a farm.  Where can I get a baptismal look up or purchase details of baptisms for the nearest place for this, would it be Llandewi Abergewsyn in 1819 or would that be Llanfihangel Abergwesyn.  Didn't they join at some stage? Would Llantwrtyd or whatever be too far away. Basically, what I'm asking is which would be the nearest parish for a birth in this Tyn y graig? :)

Many thanks

PS you say it's tiny, don't suppose any Davies's were mentioned on the other pages?! :)

the parishes were united in 1885. Baptisms 1813 - 1984 are at the National Library in Aberystwyth and the record office in Llandrindod Wells. The record office will do a half-hour look-up for £10

According to an index I have, Cardiff Central Library has copies of some of the registers as well.

I did have a look for your Davies family on the census but no sign.

osprey,

many thanks for your help, much appreciated.  I shall contact the Record Office Llandrindod Wells, see if they can find a baptismal record and put this search at hopefully an end - too many years waiting! :)

Thanks again
