Greene Family - Birthplace, marriage and decipher help
« on: Monday 27 July 09 16:31 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have posted this on the deciphering board although as its an Irish request i thought it might also be best serviced here.

We have the 1911 UK Census for the Greene family.  They were originally from Ireland and settled in Glamorganshire in the early 20th century.

Firstly we are struggling to decipher the birthplaces.  We can spot Cappoquin and Waterford although thats about it.  We do however believe that the family came from the Waterford area.  Below is an extract to see if any of you can help decipher.

Secondly, the family comprise the following, which the birthplace lines above correspond to:

Roger Greene born abt 1857 (head)
Kate Greene born abt 1863 (wife)
John Greene born abt 1887 (son)
Mary Greene born abt 1890 (daughter)
Roger William Greene born abt 1892 (son)
Denis Greene born abt 1895 (son)

The family lists themselves as having 7 children of which 5 surved as of 1911.  Roger and Kate indicate that they have been married for 25 years giving a marriage year of around 1886.

We are not sure how to progress our research in terms of obtaining birth and marriage details.  Can anybody spot any records for this family and advise us as to how we can proceed?

Furthermore, it is possible that the family were in the Waterford area of Ireland in 1901.  Does a census entry exist for them for this period as this may also help us?

Thanks in advance.

TB

the 1911 and 1901 census are in the process of being digitized by the National Archives and are due to be online sometime this year. See : http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/  (nine counties 1911 completed)

of the placenames :

the 4th and 5th lines do look like Cappoquin which is Co. Waterford

the 1st and 3rd are more difficult - possibly

   Clogheen, Co. Tipp(erary) Ireland.

I think the second one ends with  Clogheen (or whatever that is), but all I can make out of the rest of it is Ghu..gan, Bu....gouet ?

the sixth line looks like it begins and ends with a D, Co. Waterford...

the location of those three places seems to fit ok -

 Durrow, County Waterford
 Cappoquin, County Waterford
 Clogheen, Co. Tipperary

all within about 50km of each other. see this google map : http://www.rootschat.com/links/06s7/

Thanks all.

It really looks as if we are making some progress now!

Clogheen fits right and hopefully Durrow -  please feel free to decipher any of the other word or potential registrations.

Regards
