The family of James Symison McKINLAY
« on: Monday 27 July 09 22:13 BST (UK) »
Can anyone please tell me what became of any of the children of James Symison McKinlay and Harriet (Kemp); James, Grace, John, Eliza, and Mary ? I would be especially grateful for information on any marriages.

At the time of the 1901 census the family were living at 50 Claremont St., St Machar, Aberdeen Holborn.

James and Harriet were born in Orkney, as was their first son James (c1893). Grace (c1895), John (c1896) and Eliza (c1898) were born in Kincardineshire, and Mary (c1900) was born in Aberdeen.

Regards, M.

I have been looking at SP but haven't found anything positive, although I have purchased a couple of useless registrations!  :-\

You may have a point ev about the family leaving Scotland - I know James's brother John emigrated to New Zealand. I appreciate your interest.

Kind regards, M.

Hello

I note the length of time since this request for info was originally posted but I’ve only started delving into looking for info on this couple today after reading a letter from Harriet sent to my great grandmother in 1933 from Harriet’s home in Portland Oregon. Is the original author still interested in any further information?

The family did indeed go to Portland, Oregon - 1910 Census:

James S. Mc Kinley   39     Gardener
Harriet J.    ditto       37
James        ditto       17
Grace         ditto       15
John K.       ditto       14
Lily (presumably Eliza)  12
Mary B.       ditto       10
George W.    ditto        8

Census form states emigrated in 1907.

Harriet died 13/4/1956 Multonomah, Oregon
John S. died 28/11/1965    ditto          ditto

Thanks Annette that information was really interesting. I’ve also been trying to find out information on an older sister of Harriet and therefore sister in law of the gentleman James Symison McKinlay. She was called Elizabeth Halcro Kemp Isbister and she also settled in Portland. I believe as I’ve located her still in Orkney on 1891 census that she has gone to US between then and 1892 as her daughter Margaret was born there in 1892. I have been able to locate dates of death but I wanted to really know if she had ever lived in Long Island?

'Elizabeth' was only a half sister of Harriet and thus never had the surname Kemp.

She was born Elizabeth Halcro Wishart in 1869, illegitimate daughter of Isabella Wishart (mother of Harriet) and raised by her Wishart grandparents.  (Her marriage certificate when married to Thomas Isbister states her father was named William Sutherland).

Census forms state immigration was 1891 but cannot see the couple on UK outgoing passenger lists or US incoming passenger lists.

Thanks. I had some of this information but as you say nothing on passengers lists or immigration. All really interesting stuff- they were both Aunts of my grandmother who herself is now 92 but she remembers them sending her dresses from US when she was little girl, she’ll be thrilled with all this info.
