FRASER/FRAZER Family- Salford Manchester.
« on: Thursday 30 July 09 02:38 BST (UK) »
I'm hoping that SKS can help me with either guidance, access to records or any information about my Fraser/Frazer Family from Salford.. I live in Australia and I'm cannot access a great deal of information at all.

Alexander Fraser/Frazer was Born C. 1838 and his fathers name was Hugh... In 1868 he married Sarah Berry @ Manchester Cathedral after Banns.
Alexander & Sarah had 7 children.

William Baptised 28.03.1869
Alexander Born 16.09.1870- I think they both died in childhood(nothing in 1881 Census.

Joseph Born Circa. 1874- he married Isabella Salisbury

Hugh Born 05 Dec 1876.died 07.08.1928. Australia.( he married Ernestine Neumann/Newman.

Emily. Baptised. 27.07.1879
Sarah E.  Born Circa. 1884 Salford
Annie      Born Circa 1887. Salford.

I have searched through the UK Census and found that the " Fraser/Frazer's " lived in and around Salford several address's include Eldon Street, where Alexander Died in 1899- Vernon Street in 1881 and 66 Union Street West, Salford... I am assuming they rented houses..

After Alexander died  30.09.1899 -Sarah his wife took the 3 daughters,  Emily, Sarah & Annie back to Bollington Cheshire where she came from... I have also established that Sarah and the 3 girls must have working in a Cotton Mill- as they were Cotton Weavers...

My Dilemma is...as follows...  In all of the UK Census.. Alexander's Birthplace was always listed as Manchester.. then in the 1891 UK Census he is listed as being born in a place called Llymonsdale or Slymonsdale Gloucester... I have searched Maps and found a "Slymonsdale Farm" near a place called Baldwin's Gate in Staffordshire, not Gloucester... personally I'm not convinced that Alexander was born in either Gloucester or Staffordshire...

I am trying to establish where Alexander (the husband of Sarah) was born.. I know his father's name was HUGH from the Certificates that I've purchased.. if I can find this information it would " Topple" my brick wall after 20 years.. sometimes you just need a pair of fresh eyes...

If anyone can help in any way I would be most appreciative and hope to hear in the future..

Thank you for your patience.

Looking at the 1881 sheet, Alex and Sarah are down as being born Salford. Joseph was born Cheltenham and Hugh Bollington.
Joseph and Hugh's births, though, were registered in Salford.

I think that the enumerator mistranscribed the original places of birth, which would make the Cheltenham area Alex's birthplace.

Slymansdale, though, does not seem the right style of placename for the area around Cheltenham. The town itself is in the flattish area around the Severn, and the hills to the south east seem to have -combe names rather than -dale.

My guess is that Alexander moved around as a child, so may not have known where he was actually born. One of my relatives keeps changing her place of birth at censuses. Sometimes she says Manchester, sometimes St Helens (where she was as a teenager), a couple of time "Bradbury". I now think that I've found her in 1841 as a child at Cleobury Mortimer in Shropshire.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Thanks so much for your reply...

I have to admit that Cheltenham is the only place that I have not looked thus far..and I think you could be right that Alexander as a child may have moved around and perhaps the name " Slymondale" or llymonsdale " as in the UK Census could be part of early childhood..

The interesting thing is I had an email from the Staffordshire records Office and in 1889 Ordinance Survey there was a house named  " Slymansdale" on the road from Baldwin's Gate to Camp Hall on a road that is now called Camp Hill.  Baldwin's Gate in in the Parish of Maer... Staffordshire.. not Gloucester as mentioned in the 1891 UK Census.... Hmm!!!

I know that Alexander was Literate and so a name like "Slymonsdale" would not slip easily off someone's tongue... where too now... !!!

I'm now at a complete loss as to where to start researching and any suggestions or help would be very much appreciated..

Thank you for your kindness..

Tathra,

It's been some time since I last posted a message here and in the meantime I have had to upgrade my computer to Win7 and have lost some information... However, I have found that the place where Alexander was born was on a (then) farm callewd Slymonsdale in Staffordshire. which is near Baldwin's gate... which was given to me by The Staffordshire Records Office after researching there... I think that is enough of a Primary Record... can't get much better than the records Office.

If you could add anything further I would love to hear from you.

Kind Regards
Faysie

What was the father, Hugh's occupation? - should be on Alexander's wedding cert.  Also who were the witnesses at the wedding - Frasers or from the wife's side?  Also have you found Alexander with any certainty before his wedding?  I note that his age, his occupations and his place of birth all vary quite a lot from census to census, which makes relying on any one "fact" unreliable.  Who registered his death?  could have been a brother or sister (another clue) or an official (in which case, age less reliable) .

Dear Alpinecottage.

Thank you for your response, it is very much appreciated. it is 9.30pm in Australia right now and I was about to shut down, lucky for me I saw your email and I wanted to answer straight away as you raised some very valid points.

Firstly on Alexanders's Marriage Cert to Sarah Berry, it states his father's name as Hugh Frazer ( note the variation in change of spelling) as an Engineer. (2) The Witness's were Sarah's brother Joseph Berry and Hannah Slate ?? ( don't know who she is. (3) you are correct in stating that the Census varies and yes it does say his ages etc are different.. it took me a couple of years to finally work out with the help of my Fraser Cousin who has been researching for over 30 years to find where Alexander was born @ Slymonsdale.... (4) On his Death Certificate the Informant was his wife Sarah Fraser ( again the name changes) nee Berry who was living in Eldon St, Salford at the time... after Alexander died.. Sarah and her daughters went back to Bollington where she came from...

As you can see I have purchased quite a few Primary Records along this journey and have gained more than one reliable Fact or Primary Record as well as using the UK Census as a guide.. I hope that this answers your questons..Please also note that I validate all of my research with as many Primary records as I can afford.

Again my "Thanks" for your reply".

Sincerely
Faysie

Oops !!! I forgot to mention.

On the Birth Certificate of their son Alexander 26 Sep 1870. @ West Union St, Salford... on the Certificate the name changes again to Frazer... states the mother being Sarah Frazer formerly Berry... Occupation of father that of " iron Driller"...

So you can see Alexander the father changed jobs as best he could get work... they were poor honest workers...

Cheers again.
