Unknown land marks
« on: Thursday 30 July 09 10:30 BST (UK) »
We have just returned from  a couple of day at the Campimh and Caravan site at Folkstone Kent.

On the adjacent beach, there is a large concrete pad the size of a football pitch and nobody can explane what it is !

Does any body Know ???  Is it from channel tunnel working ?( it looks too old )

Is it left over from the war ??

It can be seen on Google

The foreshore was concreted over where the Channel Tunnel enters the sea at Maxton, but that is nearer to Dover than Folkstone. There have been complaints because the cliff will (has?) turned green as the sea can no longer keep it clear of vegetation.

Can you give the postcode of the campsite :D If it stops raining I could do with a trip to the coast. Do they provide wifi?

Ken

Hi   KM1971

The post code for the site is  CT19 6NQ and they do have wifi.

The concreted area is just past the site on the beach area and at the back of the pad away from the sea are two narrow gauge rails.

The site staff do not know what the area is and are interested to find out
as lots of people do ask.

Speaking with no knowledge of the area at all, what you describe sounds a bit like a gun emplacement. Just 2d worth.

Just found this possible explanation:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/wandering/DIARY/Mackerel%20on%20the%20fly,%20Folkestone%20-%2014%20July%202002.htm

"During WW2, a huge concrete apron was built against the base of the cliffs between Folkestone and Dover to facilitate the loading of ammunition on to warships."

I imagine the ammunition could have been delivered on the narrow guage railway, but I would have thought there would be a jetty of some sort to transfer it to the ships.

I think the place you're describing is called the Warren Apron. The area you camped in is a part of Folkestone called the Warren. Have been there many times as a kid, and remember playing on that concrete. It gets very slippery with algae etc and a young child was drowned there earlier this year when her buggy was swept off the apron into the sea.  :(

Yes, it would be "The Apron"
