catholic register of warkworth?
« on: Thursday 30 July 09 18:13 BST (UK) »
Hi all, anyone ever come across any warkworth catholic registers circa 1800? I've checked all catholic registers of neighbouring parishes for baptisms of these particular brickwalls without success.  pete

Hi Pete,

According to genuki Warkworth doesn't appear to have a Catholic church - the nearest seems to be Amble

Hi Christine, unfortunately Amble catholic church came along much later. There never was a catholic church in warkworth, i am stumped as to where my lot were baptised, and thought someone may have had the same problem.  Felton,Alnwick Bywell and Hartburn being the nearest, i checked and nowt. Hoping there may have been some provision for catholic baptisms in what was quite a large parish. Thanks, pete

Pete,

are you saying you have searched unsuccessfully for baptisms in The catholic churches of Felton ( St Mary's) , Alnwick (St Mary's) etc.

Felton RC about 5-6 miles from Warkworth town/village
Alnwick RC about 6-7 miles from Warkworth.

Some Parish Churches ( Church of England/Angican) recorded some non-conformist baptisms. St Laurence, parish church of Warkworth was one.

But Catholics would have free to travel to their ( nearest ? ) own church, which in the example of Warkworth would have been within another Parish.

There was also a RC church in Witton, south west of Longhorsley. ( from circa 1790)

Hi Michael, yes i have checked the registers of all rc churches within a reasonable circumference of Warkworth and found not one baptism. I have eleven people born Acklington/Warkworth 1755-1820 and cannot sort out relationships without birth records.
In case you're wondering why i'm looking at rc records, i did manage to find one family member who registered his childrens births in Morpeth anglican church 1790's but didn't get them baptised. (the birth register states, catholics) They are buried at St Josephs rc Morpeth

Ooo, a posh side - impressive  ;D

I've just been back on genuki and note that the Warkworth non-con records 1723 - 1824 are at Newcastle Library.  Do you have access?

If not maybe you could ask Michael nicely - I know he goes there  ;)
