POW in Singapore - John McGrory
« on: Friday 31 July 09 20:17 BST (UK) »
Have checked the records for my mother's brother, John McGrory, who family stories say was killed in the Second World War.  I have found a record on the Rangoon Memorial for a John McGrory who would have been around the same age etc.  The record doesn't show his personal details - how can I find out if this is my uncle.

Any help would be appreciated ???

Per CWGC the one on the Rangoon memorial in Burma is Private JOHN FINDLAY CUNNINGHAM McGRORY, 3053889 2nd Bn  King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Aged 25, Date of Death 23/02/1942,  son of Patrick and Jane McGrory.  Is that a fit?

There was also a Corporal JOHN  McGRORY  3315841, Reconnaissance Corps who died aged 24 on 24/02/1942. He is commemorated on the Singapore memorial.

Sorry - got my memorials mixed up

The Patrick & Jane's son isn't my uncle - his parents were Hugh & Margaret.

It looks as though the other John McGrory is a possible but the record doesn't show any parents names - and the MOD can't really confirm without lots of other info we don't have.

Looks like another brick wall !!!! :'( :'(

Thanks for your help anyway

Hi Old Rowley

Thanks a million for your suggestions - it's great to have everybody's input and I didn't have any idea where to go next.

My mum and all her family are no longer with us and the few cousins remaining are too young to remember any discussion about John.  My brothers and sisters all remember my mum's stories, so I am anxious to close one of the most interesting loose ends in the family history.

You do get hooked on it all - and as you close off one dead end, another beckons !!

Once again, thanks for your help and I'll keep you posted on my progress or lack of it.

Cheers

Just looking at the detail on CWGC, Corporal John McGrory was with the 18th regiment of the Reconnaisance Corps, which was 5 Battalion of the Loyal  Regiment.  Is there a Lancashire connection perhaps?

Hi,
you could always give C.W.G.C. Enquiries section a call as they may have more detail in their master records.

I have found them very helpful in the past with such requests.
