HARVEY from NEW ROMNEY / RYE
« on: Monday 03 August 09 21:00 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have  a George Harvey in my family tree who according too Census was born in New Romney in about 1807. I have searched on FamilySearch.org but has turned up nothing, please could someone look it up for me in the parish records.

Also there is a possible brother being Henry Harvey born 1806 possibly in Rye, same story again.

Thanks for your help

OK, guess the family didn't exist or weren't into christenings as I can't find them dying either! ;)

Thanks for your reply.

They clearly did if you have George & Henry on census!

The 1851 for Sussex shows George as a master mariner

The 1861 for Sussex shows Jane as a mariners widow

So George either died in Sussex between 1851-1861 or he died at sea between those dates

They were living in the Worthing registration district in both 1851 and 1861 and this is the only death listed for that area between 1851-1861 but it relates to their son who was aged 15 in 1851

Deaths September qtr 1852

HARVEY  George Edgar     Worthing  2b 161

I reckon he died at sea

How do you find out about deaths at Sea then.. I know George was a master mariner and i've searched the burial records for littlehampton so it is quite probable that he died at sea. Well the hunt goes on...i'm sure one day i will stumble across something as it seems to happen that way.

Thanks

I am looking for the same George Harvey. In desperation I looked in the census for other Harveys with Rye./New Romney connections and came across a Thomas Harvey from Rye, with a wife named Elizabeth in the 1841 census. They were both born around 1776 . He was born in Rye, according to the 1851 census, when he was described as a widower and a superannuated revenue officer, living as a lodger with the family of a Richard Pearson. No definite links to our George as yet unfortunately.

There is a christening record for 4th October 1774 at Rye, Sussex for a Thomas Harvey. Father-John, mother Martha.
