Can people really just disappear between 1901 and 1911?
« on: Monday 03 August 09 21:01 BST (UK) »
Hi,
This is my first message, so i apologise if it's in the wrong place, and straight away i'm asking for help.
I have hit a brickwall with a grand-uncle and a grand-aunt. Their names are Arthur BELLIS and Anne Maria BELLIS, children of Josiah Hugh BELLIS and Anne Maria BELLIS nee WHARTON. Both were born in 1875, but at different ends. There were ten children in all and i have managed to complete all lines except these two.
In the 1901 Census they were both living at 25 Elliot Street, Widnes, Lancashire with their younger brother Henry and their father, then in August 1901 their father died.
 I can't find these two in the 1911 census, there aren't any marriage or death records in the UK for these that i can find. I have searched through emigration records and ships lists to no avail. They weren't even that young in 1901 (26ish).
I would have thought that the more modern records got, the easier it would be to research people in them, but i'm having real difficulty with these two.
If anyone could help or point me in a direction i haven't thought of i would very much appreciate it.
TIA
Paul

Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply :). They were both born in Widnes.
The siblings that were living in 1911 were as follows;
George Hugh BELLIS living at 174 Boundary Road, St Helens with his wife and eight children.
Josiah BELLIS living at 14 Carlile Street, Widnes with his wife and six children.
Sarah Jane PERCY nee BELLIS living at 110 Alder Lane, Hindley, Wigan with her husband and six children.
Alfred BELLIS on board the 'IVERNIA' on the way to Chicago, Illinois, USA. His wife Kate BELLIS nee ANDERSON was living at 64 Campbell Street, St Helens, Lancs with three children.
Henry BELLIS living at 113 Cliffe Road, Strood, Kent with his wife and daughter.
All other sibling had died pre 1911 and Anne Maria BELLIS and Arthur weren't with any of them.

I also have a transcript of their father's will which reads as follows;

THE  WILL  OF  JOSIAH  HUGH  BELLIS

 This is the last will and testament of Josiah Hugh Bellis of 25 Elliot St Widnes in the county of Lancashire made this seventh day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and one.
  I hereby revoke all wills by me at any time heretofore  made.
  I appoint George Hugh Bellis of 169 Cambridge Rd  St Helens lancashire to be my executor,and I direct that all my just debts and funeral and testamentary expences shall  be paid as soon as possible after my decease.
  I hereby give and bequeath unto my children George Hugh,  Josiah,  Sarah Jane,  Arthur,  Annie Maria,  Alfred  and Henry, the whole of my property ,consisting of cash in the Manchester and Salford Bank and death and burial funds and household goods in equal proportion, or ,should any predecease me,the above properties to be equally divided among the then living,  but I hereby require that an invntory of my household goods should be taken and kept by my son, George Hugh Bellis,and that my children Annie Maria, Arthur and Alfred should have the use of the entire household  goods until they, by mutual consent, agree to break up the house .  Then should the above household goods be sold by public auction, and the money realized be equally divided.
  Should anything arise that causes my eldest son, George Hugh Bellis, to vary this arrangement for the disposal of my furniture, I hereby give him full power to do so

     Signed  Josiah Hugh Bellis
The witnesses were James Lee Hodgen  and  Henry Blackhall

The Arthur BELLES has his occupation down as a housepainter, but in 1901 he was a Plumber and Gas fitter, the same as his father. There can't be many people with that name born in Widnes in the same year though so it's looking like a good possibility. Nice one thankyou.

Re Arthur BELLIS and Harriet JONES Oldham Marriage 1905. In the 1911 Census, there is a Arthur BELLIS and wife, Harriet TRAVIS? and  Mo-in-law Mary Travis living at 63 Neville Street, Shaw, Oldham, married 6 years. I'm thinking maybe it was transcribed incorrectly and the wife should surely have her husbands surname?
