POWELL / LEWIS & TURNER / HARCOURT
« on: Tuesday 04 August 09 23:53 BST (UK) »
Hi,

A Jonathan Roger(s) POWELL was baptised in Old Buckenham, Norfolk in 1807 to a Phillip LEWIS and Elizabeth POWELL. Elizabeth Turner POWELL was also baptised to the same parents in the same place in 1810.

As far as I can make out Elizabeth POWELL was the granddaughter of an M.P. called Harcourt POWELL, who was linked to the HARCOURT family of Oxfordshire and Wales.

The name TURNER was kept in the family for over a hundred years so I assume there was some marriage to a TURNER at some point.

Does anyone know anything about:-

a) why the TURNER name was used as a middle name by the family for over a hundred years?
b) who was Phillip LEWIS
c) anything more about the POWELL or HARCOURT families in question

Thanks

Aha, Another dodgy IGI record! The marriage I was looking at said the marriage was between a Philip LEWIS and Elizabeth POWELL. It was actually between Phlip Lewis POWELL and Elizabeth TURNER. Elizabeth's brother was Dawson TURNER, banker and botanist of Great Yarmouth so explains the long use of the TURNER name.
