James TIPPETT
« on: Friday 07 August 09 01:08 BST (UK) »
Hi folk,

I am a little confused. I think I have found my James TIPPETT but the age on the record  at Waikumete Cemetery is different to the one on BDM on Line

BDM has

1940/26190   TIPPETT       JAMES       63y

The one at Waikumete has:

TIPPETT, JAMES

  Plot : Soldiers Burial G Row 2 Plot 12

  Interment Type:  Burial

  Title:  MR

  Surname : TIPPETT

  Given Names:  JAMES

  Age :  58

  Gender :      Male

  Occupation: WATERSIDER

  Date Of Death : 25-Jun-1940

   Date Of Burial : 27-Jun-1940

Funeral Director :           TILTON OPIE AND PATTINSON LIMITED

  Head Stone Details :      Yes

There are two James' on the burial locator as well
One is just a burial record and the other
Source:   NZSG Cemetery Fiche
Surname:   TIPPETT
Given Names:   James (Pte)
Year of Death:   1940
Record Number:   12668
Record Type:   M/I
Age   63:
Location:   Waikumete Cemetery RSA B02.23

Source:   Waikumete Cemetery Office
Surname:   TIPPETT
Given Names:   James
Year of Death:   1940
Record Type:   B/R
Age   58:
Location:   Waikumete Cemetery

I am inclined to think that the M/I is the right one

Can anyone else make sense of this for me

His parents are Mark TIPPETT and Ellen VOWLES

Hi Newbe

Here's my "take" on the situation.    :D

I am presuming that James served in WW1 (though I don't see a record on Archway - nor is he listed in Australian forces?     Can't see his birth on NZ index either ?)

But his "entitlement" to a "Soldier's Burial plot" would no doubt have to have been verified in some way, and I would think it likely that the funeral director has had access to details from his Army record.

So the question is, was his age on his Army record, different to his real age ??
[If he'd enlisted say, in 1914,  and was actually born in 1877, then his "real" age was 37.
Quite possibly he has "docked" 5 years off that, and presented himself as a 32 year old. ?? ]
Hence ... the cemetery record for "a soldier's burial plot" with age having been taken from Army record.

I would say that the burial locator listings are for the same person ... they've just been given separate entries because of the two different ages.   (A transcriber of such records of course is not in a position to determine whether the two James TIPPETT deaths in 1940 are for the same person).  ;)

Thanks Lu,

I have had a look at the WW1 cd and do not see him there

He was born on 27/10/1876 Auckland

BDM ref  on-line   1876/ 14693 TIPETT James   (Mother) Ellen   (Father) Mark

He could have been in the Boar War I am not sure.

Might have to contact the funeral director and find out more

Hi again Newbe

Aah  ... yes the various spellings of the surname, caught me out (I hadn't bothered checking for others).   :D

And he is listed on Archway ... as James "TIPPET" (Reg. # 56377) WW1.

I would have thought that the cemetery might also have on their records, the regimental numbers of those buried in soldiers' plots.

Hi Lu,

Be great if the cemetery did have that sort of thing on their database but I guess it would be on the headstone for him. Think I will add it to the one I am already asking for.

Thanks for that bit of info Bren,

Will need to keep digging on this family

Have found no marriage for him so I guess he stayed single unless he married overseas

Might need to get the death printout for him

I now have James' death printout.

It says he was a waterside worker and a returned soldier.
The occupation is the same as his fathers

It only has TIPPETT for the father and mother
It says he died in Evelyn Fifth Home, Parnell formally of 11 Nonland Street (I think), Newton
it also says he was married in Auckland, no year given to a Selina SIMPSON age 63
Selina died in 1940 as well and is buried at Waikumete Cemetery as well

Death was registered on 1 July 1940

I also have the death printout for his twin siblings

Harriet TIPPETT died 5 April 1879 from Whooping Cough and was living at Albert Street
William TIPPETT died 10 April 1879 from the same thing

I have searched high and low for a burial and have found nothing. There is also nothing on the death printouts either.

Informant for Harriet was her father Mark and for William it was his mother Ellen who signed with her mark X
William's death was not registered until 14 November 1879.  It also has something else written in the registrar column as well but may have to scan it to the computer and then add it here
