25th Regiment of foot (KOB)
« on: Friday 07 August 09 18:39 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Adam Lindsay was in the 25th.  He's in the 1871 census at Fort Rowner and he had a daughter annie in 1872 at Curragh Camp and another Mary Helen in 1875 in Cork.  He had a son Hugh Scott on 15 Jan 1878 in Fyzabad oudh province India and family information says he died two days before the birth.  His wife and children returned home but the wife ann (nee hillard) died on the voyage according to family news.

I am trying to find out about his time with the regiment including when he signed up & what he and his wife died of  He was born in Oct 1845 in Drumachose Londonderry Ireland and married Anne Hillard in 1866 at Westminster St Margaret & had a son thomas adam born in 1869 lambeth greater london who also joined the regiment.

Any news or information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

My GGF served with the 25th Foot as a Sergeant about the same time, and he must have been in the same battalion as he was married in Cork in 1874. He enlisted in Gosport in 1871.

I may have photographs of the musters from that period and will have a look for your ancestor.

Ken

I am searching for information about my ancestor, George Ambrose, a corporal in the 25th regiment of foot (KOB).  I would appreciate any photographs or historical information that would be relevant to George Ambrose or the 25th regiment KOB.  I know that George was born in 1843 in Ireland.  His parents were Richard Ambrose and Esther Bevons who were born in England.  Esther still lived in Ireland so far as August of 1899 as George visited her then.  George's obituary states he was a native of Kilgassisse, Ireland, but I have not been able to find out where that is.  His child's vital record indicates he was born in Cork, Ireland, but Census records say he was from Northern Ireland so I am confused about his origins.  I would like to know if George had brothers or sisters or discover more information about him.  George was married to Mary Smythe, Smith or Schmidtt, a native of Prussia, Poland.  They likely married in Canada.  Their first born child, George Mathaus Andreas Ambrose was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada July 1, 1866 and was baptised there on July 7, 1866.  Any assistance or information would be greatly appreciated.  Rebecca Ambrose

Olphert - wow! And Ken!
Adam was my GGGDad and Ken found he died of Cholera just before Hugh Scott was born.
Annie died on HMS Serapis homeward bound with the kids, but you probably already know that!!!

Olphert has not been on since 2010. Hopefully he will get an email saying there is a new post for his thread.

Rebecca..I will have a look at the weekend.

At last we have dropped the S and using the correct name for the period.
