this is a photograph of my uncle John Carter. Is the uniform he is wearing that of the Home Guard or would it be of an army regiment. Brian carter.

That is battledress, adopted shortly before WW2 and issued for many years onwards.  It could be Home Guard or Army.  See the changes over the years in the Dad's Army programmes!
