Pow-which camp??
« on: Saturday 08 August 09 13:10 BST (UK) »
Miltary, just does my head in!! I have toooo many questions, i just cant get it!

ok, how can I find out which POW camp my Granddad was in? His paper work my Gran has given me says,

Middle East 15.8.1941-20.6.1942.
Italy-Prisioner of War 21.6.1942- 6.3.1944
Germany POW 7.3.1944-15.5.1945.
so I gather he was captured in the Middle East, taken to Italy the next day then transferred to Germany from Italy, but where? He apparently escaped from a camp in Germany 3 times but recaptured, lucky for him, he survived.

Now also on his papers it says released to class "z" (t) reserved 16.6.1948  what does that mean?

service with the colours 28.8.1939-15.6.1948, excuse my ignorance, sorry!

He was awarded the star, war medels etc but what is an Efficiency Medal (T) exactly?

Gee, I am useless!!! I can see my Granddad looking down on me now from the heavens above, shaking his head. I am kicking myself now for not listening to his War Stories.

Thanks Ele.

Hi Ele

Class Z meant that he was demobilised, but although he went back into civilian life he was held on reserve so that should war restart he could be brought back to the Army quickly. Looks like he was 'reserved' until 16.6.1948 and was finally released on 15.6.1948.

Wow, thank you kindly. Have taken a look at the camps (and the stalag 1vc camp) just nice to be able to know which camp my Granddad was at. Poor buggers- makes me thankful for the life I have and that my hubby didnt/doesnt have to go to war or my kids.

Just wish I had listened to his stories. May have to phone Mum and see if she remembers any or can ask Gran.

Thanks again, much appreciated.

Don't take the position as being as accurate as they would be today.
