Is there an 1881 census for Ireland on-line? Am not sure of the town but think it might be County Down. Cass

1821 - 1851 census returns were destroyed by fire in 1922

1861 - 1891  as Gigg says destroyed by the government.

Gig, I think you may have got that wrong about the 1911 census.  It's available in the Republic, and includes the returns for what is now Northern Ireland. That, anyway, is my understanding. I believe the reason for releasing the 1911 'early' was because there was so little other census information surviving in the Republic.

Hi Gigg

Perhaps I've got the wrong end of the stick here.  I thought the query was more about what census records were open to the public. I see from your link that work is going ahead to put the 1911 online but isn't it a fact that it's already available to see at the National Archives and there is also an online enquiry form for submitting a request for extracts?

hi folks, just found this thread.the irish 1911 census is
available in the national archives in bishop street dublin and
index on microfilm in dublin city library in pearse street dublin
and has been for some time .have to wait til' autumn until it
appears online but it will be free.
                                                      regards.anne
on the minus side, they say it will start to come online then and it and the 1901 will be added over a 3 to 4 year period.

The 1911 census is available in Dublin and the 1901 census is available at both Belfast and Dublin.
