Visit to Lincolnshire - Completed, thank you
« on: Monday 10 August 09 15:08 BST (UK) »
I am visiting UK in Oct/Nov from Australia and want to visit Sleaford, Louth and Market Rasen in particular, and also have a general interest in other places. I need suggestions for the best place to base myself for a visit of 4-5 days. Many of my extended family come from these places and I am excited about seeing where my great grandparents and those before them lived, and where my grandfather was born, before he went to NZ.
Any suggestions/advice would be very much appreciated.
Regards
Jan Moon

Hello Janmoon

How exciting for you to be coming to Lincolnshire to further your research  :)

North Kyme, which is very near to Sleaford. Many years later the premises have been made into a wonderful place to stay.
see http://www.oldcoachhousemotel.co.uk/index.html

Hopefully you will be hiring a car to drive around   :D

then if you want nearer to Louth there are these

Lincoln offers many good places also and is quite central to get to you destinations

Jo

Hello, we have just made a visit to Lincolnshire and the second part was in Spalding where we stayed a a lovely Guest house "White Lodge"  10,Halmer Gate. (01775 791 002) It has five stars in recognition of the high standard. They do a special  weekend price ie 3 nights for the price of two because during the week they have business people staying Mon-Thu and do the long weekend. It is within 5minutes comfortable walking distance of a very nice Italian restaurant"Prezzo" where at reasonable cost we ate very well. BOTH HGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Spalding is about 20 miles from Sleaford. P.S. it is wise to book at Prezzo as it is very popular.  The proprietors of White Lodge would do that for you the first night and then you can decide for yourselves .
Hope you enjoy your visit. Viktoria.

Janmoon, I noticed you are also visiting Dorset. This may be useful to you, in the 1790s Units of the Somerset Militia were stationed in the market towns of Lincolnshire to resist possible invasion by Napoleon. I know it was the Somerset militia, but men from North Dorset, including my 2X great father enlisted in the unit. So if someone left the South west in the 1790s and reappeared in Lincolnshire that is one possibility. Lincs Archives have information on the Militia Unit, as does the National Archive at Kew.
Ayres Brignell Cornwell Harvey Shipp  Stimpson Stubbings (all Cambs) Baumber Baxter Burton Ethards Proctor Stanton (all Lincs) Luffman (all counties)
