Ernest Edward Pay - Kent to Africa?

Hello all

I posted the above thread on the Common Room board, as not certain where to go with it.

It concerns my great great uncle Ernest Edward Pay, born 1872 Isleworth, Middlesex, who disappears after the 1881 Census, and is shown in family notes as being "in Africa" in 1926.

Casalguidi has turned up a possible marriage ref for me in 1898 in Grahamstown, can anyone give me any other hints to see if I can track him down?

NAAIRS has two references/documents for him:

1906 - Mortgage Bond for Ernest Edward Pay

1938 - Ernest Edward Pay (S/S Eliza Pay) - Not sure what this document is though.

Did my Ernest Edward marry, get a mortgage (would this have been on a house?  Presume so) and then, is the 1938 document a death ref?

Igor - I honestly don't know what the 1938 document is. Normally on NAAIRS death references are called Death Notices.

You can order a copy from them - the process and the link to the NAAIRS site can be found in the sticky threads on this board.

can you tell me which of the databases you found the 1938 ref?  I've looked in them all and can't seem to see it.

You'll need to search under PAY and ERNEST.

If you search the RSA archive choice, it gives all archive references. The mortgage was in Cape town and one cannot get those docs through eggsa but if Ouma is going in to the archives perhaps she can look it up for you -send her a PM and i am sure she will help.
The second doc in 1938 is his death notice which usually contains a lot of information. The SS stands for Surviving Spouse Eliza. Having searched for Eliza Pay - T found a reference to Minnie Eliza Thiselton - a daughter perhaps? I have searched my cemetery lists but have not come across them although there are a number of PAY deaths in Natal, though probably not related. There are only 27 death notices for the surname so it is not common in SA. The death notice is held in Pietermaritzburg and could have a will attached if he left property. Apply for this via Eggsa - be warned that it could take a while! Give them a reminder after a month or two.

Thank you all very much for your help and advice.  It would be great to track Ernest Edward down.  The Thiselton reference is also intriguing, I have a vague feeling that I have heard that name before, but I can't recall where or when.  A married daughter, you think.

I will venture to eggsa and see what transpires, not expecting a swift response, as you note!

According to Who's Who in South Africa (1915 edition) it was Minnie Eliza PAY who married Albert Edward THISELTON in Durban in 1889. He was a shipping agent who arrived in Durban in 1882. You can find them on the 1901 census in London, returning to Durban later that year. Their daughter Edna was born in Durban, but I'm not sure about Minnie being born in Durban. Albert was born in London, but his father was from Faversham in Kent.
