Looking for John BURREN c1796 of Maidstone.
« on: Tuesday 11 August 09 09:51 BST (UK) »
Hi!

I am trying to track down the birthdate/place and parents of agricultural labourer John BURREN c1796, born in "Maidstone" according to the 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses.

[He married Catherine LINK in Boxley near Maidstone on 17 Apr 1824 and was with Catherine and/or various family members in "Kent" in 1841 and in West Peckham, Kent in the 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses.  The transcription of the name BURREN in different censuses varies wildly, including BUNCE (1861) and BERNAR (1841-Ancestry.co.uk;  I have not actually seen this census page).  Looking at LDS/IGI produces no results for his approximate birthdate.]

I'd be very grateful if anyone could come up with any information about John BURREN and his relatives/ancestors.

Thanks very much!

Therese.

Thanks for looking - that could well be him.  :)

(I don't suppose there's a marriage for John and Elizabeth is there in the preceeding years?)

IGI list Jane (1799), Cordelia (1794), Mary Ann (1791) and Elizabeth (1793) as christened in Maidstone, daughters of a John Burren and Elizabeth.  Do you think they might be part of the same family?

Again, many thanks!

Therese.

Hi Theresa

Maidstone marriages are included on the Mid Kent Marriage Index (1754-1911) http://woodchurchancestry.org.uk/midkentmarriages/index.php

The children you  mention above do look as though they could well be siblings of John

Hi!

Thanks!  :)

I have just looked for various people on that web site and they are not there, although I have yet to try all the possible alternative spellings.

I'll keep you posted...

Again, many thanks.  :)

Looking at the Mid-Kent Marriages list of "Soundex" variants of BURREN, there are two or three John Browns who married Elizabeths, some in Maidstone.  (Not a great deal of use given how common a name that is!)

Perhaps the most likely person on the list is John BOURNE who married Elizabeth BRYANT in Thurnham, just north of Maidstone, on 7th July 1785.

I quite like this one as Thurnham is very near Boxley, where John BURREN jnr married Catherine LINK in 1824.

Is BOURNE a likely mis-spelling/hearing/transcription of BURREN?  What do people think?

Perhaps I should be looking at Thurnham, Bearsted, Boxley and so-on as well as Maidstone?

Any opinions very welcome!  :)

It's a possibility.  :-\

If you search for the name BURREN on the Mid Kent Marriage Index there are several entries.  Looking at the places where the name occurs pre 1770, when John would have been born, the results suggest Bethersden, Headcorn, Hollingbourne & East Sutton as possible villages to explore.

There was a John BURREN baptised in Headcorn 5th October 1766 son of Peter & Mary.  He didn't marry in Headcorn nor can I see a burial for him.

There was also a John BURREN baptised at Staplehurst 3rd May 1772 son of Thomas & Susanna.  I can't see a marriage or burial for him either.
