ABLETT, SCULCOATS, HULL
« on: Wednesday 12 August 09 07:48 BST (UK) »
I have traced my Ablett family back to William Ablett, (my great great grandfather) married to Ellen Ablett, with children William, Mary and Edward. According to the 1871 census the family lived at Wilson's Row, Macell Street, in the parish of St Mary's, Sculcoates, Hull.

William Ablett is said to have been born "around 1816". There is an entry in the Electoral Roll for 1834, for a William Ablett living at Wilson's Row, Macell Street, and I assume this is the same William Ablett.

Can anyone help- I want to trace the family further back. Where can I find info about William Ablett's ancestors in Hull, going back from the 1830's back to 1700's etc?

Many thanks

One step at time!

you mention 1871 census - have you found the family in 1861/51/41? What age are the children? Was he married by 1841? If his marriage was post 1837 then a marriage cert will give his fathers name. What place(s) of birth does he give in the census?
Let us know if you have followed these stages, or if not, if you want help with them, then we will move on - next step will be to check IGI for a christening (once we are sure of where he might have been born and who father was if possible!)

William 45 Cabinet maker cant read birthplace but noy Hull
Ellen E 40 bn Yarmouth

Wilsons Row
William 35 Cabinet maker bn Hull

Hmm - this might be them

But writing is absolutely dire

1841
HO107 1232 12
Fosters Square? Next to Wilson Row

Wm Ablet (indexed Abbo) 38?  Cooper
Hannah 40
Sam Chapman 20
MAry Chapman 20
Joseph Chapman 4 mths

I think William (junior) and Ellen may well be on the next page, but the image is such a mess I doubt it has been indexed - I cant make out the names sensibly but one family may, possibly, wishful thinkingly, be Wm Ablett. The occupation is readable as cabinet maker, anyway!

Think I am going to give up this lark.
A mornings work wasted for one or other of us!

One day I will learn to always check profiles for other posts BEFORE spending time searching.
