Toronto fire dept
« on: Friday 14 August 09 09:18 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Can anyone offer me advice on how to trace to ancestors who where members of the Toronto fire dept. I have tried emailing them directly but never got a reply. The two chaps, father and son were in the service between 1919 - 1958

Many thanks

Penn  :)

Hi Penn

Perhaps you could try contacting the Toronto Fire Museum, bound to find someone who would at least be interested in replying to you with some advice. Quite often they have volunteers who are fire-buffs and have lots of local knowledge.

Hi Penninah,

A friend of mine is a retired Captain from the Toronto Fire Department.  I believe they have a publication that they send out to all their fireman/retirees.  I can ask him how you could find out.

It's not one of the Doling boys is it   ;D  ;)

Brilliant, hope that does the trick then  :)

There is also an annual publication for Fire Buffs called ' The Visiting Fireman '
my husband ( retired officer NZ ) used to subscribe to it so I looked up an out
of date copy and there were a few names listed for Toronto, perhaps someone
who would be willing to help.
Your friend will know of it Karen  :) http://www.visitingfireman.com/

Hi Penn,

You may also want to contact the City of Toronto. I believe most fire departments are part of City or Towns public services and the municipal office may have some records. Toronto has changed quite a bit over the years as well taking in many of the surrounding cities and town, each with thier own fire department(s), ie North York, etc . Toronto proper and what Toronto is now quite different than back then. The Toronto Library system may have some info as well. Hope that helps,
