1871/81 census look up please
« on: Friday 14 August 09 11:46 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find a Jean/Jane Williamson and John Williamson in the 1871 and 1881 censuses.

Jean was born c1811 and John in 1813.

In 1851 and 1861 Jean is at Lochs or Muir of Lochs.  In 1851 John is at Lochs but I have not found him in the 1861.  Jean died in 1884 and John in 1890.

Their daughter and family (McKenzie) are recorded living at Lochs or Muir of Lochs 1881/91 and 1901.

In the 1861 census there is also a Magness Millinger and a Jessie Stewart.  I forgot to note who they were.  Are they servants or boarders.

Any help with this query would be much ppreciated.

Thanks

Betty

Hi Betty

Magness Millinger and Jessie Stewart show as visitors in 1861, both boron in Retsligs (?spl), Aberdeen.

Possibly the family in 1871, ages a bit out:

John Williamson 57, Crofter & Labourer
Jane Williamson 53
Ann Williamson 22
Christian Williamson 19
James 17
Ann   ?, servant (writing must be too faint to transcribe perhaps?)

No address other than Urquhart (they are all showing as born there)

Likely same household in 1881:

John Williamson 67 b. Urquhart
Jean Williamson 68, b. Dallas, Morayshire (as per Jean's 1861 entry)

Address: Lochs. Stoniebridge, Urquhart, Moray

Thanks Monica for providing me with this information.

I would say the 1881 census are my lot of Williamsons going by the place of birth for Jean.

The 1871 are probably them as well but I need to look at that to be sure.

After putting my message on the forum I ordered John Williamson's death extract.  The address is Moor of Lochs, Urquhart.  Up until a few hours ago I thought that our gr. gr.  grandparents Alexander and Isabella (nee Williamson) McKenzie had taken over the croft from John and Jean Williamson but as Moor/Muir of Lochs was a hamlet it could be that both families lived in two different houses.  The 1881 census shows the McKenzies and the Williamsons living at two different houses.  Is there anything to indicate that Lochs, Stoniebridge, Urquhart is the same as Muir of Lochs, Urquhart.

Thanks again

Betty

Hi Betty

Looking at the old maps in the NLS
eg http://geo.nls.uk/os6inch/google.html

What is now on OS maps as Muir of Lochs was known as Lochs Crofts in the 1920s with what may be Loch's farm to the east.

On the modern OS map the woods behind tham are "Stoneybrigg Woods", on the old one from the 1800s "Staniebrig Wood".

On the old map there are 7 or 8 buildings so the families may have stayed in different houses.

Thanks Kirsty for sending me that link.

I think it is looking more like the Williamsons might have lived in one of the houses on the right side of the road as you come from Kingston.  The house I am sure about is on the other side just before you leave the boundary.  That is where the McKenzies lived.

I am going to have a look at the free CEN to see if I have any luck finding the Williamsons and neighbours and see if I can work out which house they lived in.

Thanks for your help.

Betty

Magness Millinger and Jessie Stewart show as visitors in 1861, both boron in Retsligs (?spl), Aberdeen.

Most likely Pitsligo, which is a parish in the County of Aberdeen. ( Just to confuse things, New Pitsligo is a village in the neighbouring parish of Tyrie.)

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks for that information.  I have not seen the original but Pitsligo sounds good.  I will have a look at them to see who they are once I have sorted out my Williamsons.

Thanks
