My ROWLEY Brickwall
« on: Friday 14 August 09 11:47 BST (UK) »
Can anyone out here help me with my rowley family. my Richard rowley was born abt. 1835 in bedford. at some time he moved to london and in 1870 he married Elizabeth turnbull in Bethnal Green. they had several children one being my great grandmother Alice Maud in 1883 in deptford. He worked for the London County Council and was a ganger boss on the horse drawn tram lines from london to woolwich in the early 1900's He died in 1916 aged 81 in woolwich. As I carn't find them on any of the census records I have no idea who the other children were except for frederick charles born in 1886.  Another one was Queenie ? who dashed her head on the sideboard and died, when I have no idea. There seems to be only 2 living children. Very sad.
Any help with this one would be much appreciated.

Hi Brissiegal,

Which censuses do you have access to?

In 1891, I have a suspicion that they may be listed with the surname Cooper - have a look at RG12/514  37 4 and tell me what you think

This might explain the Rowley/Cooper issue - if he's our man anyway!
(Richard's age seems to vary a lot through the censuses)

I have this family in my Cooper (of which I am one from the neighbouring parishes of Arlesey and Henlow) tree going back to the 1650s. Richard Rowley's birth and baptism are on the IGI - born 5 Apr 1839, baptised 28 June 1840 - extracted so reliable.

As there doesn't seem to any question of illegitimacy (at least so far as Richard goes, although Sarah was born a couple of months before her parents married) it's odd that he should have intermittently used the Cooper name.

Understandable of course that he would want to be known as one of the Bedfordshire Coopers!!!
