HELP!!! How to get my emails onto new computer.COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 20 August 09 12:06 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

My dearest son has bought his mum (who has not many technical computer skills ;D) a new computer. I now cannot access my outlook express account and have no idea how to get my account on to my new computer. I did try but made a big muck of it.Can some kind person with the knowledge of how to do this explain to me how you do it.
I do know a small amount of the workings of computers and can follow simple instructions ;D
Please can someone help :)
I have outllook express.

Windows creates a folder that holds all individual settings in a folder called:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name

Some of the folders such as Application Data and Local Setting are hidden and therefore you may need to go into Folder Options in Control Panel and change a setting so that you can view certain folders.

Your emails are kept in inbox.dbx and your address book is kept in a .wab file (Windows Address Book).

You need to transer those files to an identical location on you new computer.

In terms of setting up your account it should be a case of you following a wizard.  Tools >> Account Settings and then you add a new account.

Your incoming account is something like:

pop.yourname@yourisp.com

Your outgoing account is something like:

smtp.yourname@yourisp.com
Sussex: Floate, West
Kent: Tuffee
Cheshire: Gradwell
Lancashire: Gradwell

Thankyou downside for your reply. :-*

To transfer the information about my email account from my old computer to the new one do I have to copy the information from the old computer on a CD and then download it onto the new one. If this is so can I copy the information on a USB stick and do it that way.
Yes I know I I`m hopeless ::)
I did google information about my enquirey and it said you had to take the info from one computer to the other by transferring the info onto a CD but wasn`t real sure about doing this procedure.
I do love my new computer and its much much faster [yay ;D] but I`m hopeless at sorting out things like this.

Hi Johngirl

glad to hear you are enjoying your new pc!
yes you can use a usb stick to copy the files over.

Is you new pc XP or Vista?  Vista doesn't have outlook but uses Windows Mail
you set the  account up the same way though.

You may need a little more help later to import your old email folders and address book though if you are now Vista

yes, it is quite easy but if its the first time you have done it then it can be a little scary if you are not very techie.

XP is easy, set up the outlook account first then it will be ready for the importing.

No worries KHP ;D

Hope I can do it as easy as you have KHP.
Yes jc26red it will be scary but I will have a go at it. I think I already set up the account on my new computer ???
I just couldn`t work out the POP3 etc and had them ar*e about. ::)Well I think I did. ;D
Will come back and let you know if I have got it sorted.
If I don`t get it sorted I will probably need a step by step account of how to do it :-[ ;D

first thing to do after you have set it up, is to send a test message to yourself.

If you receive it, then you have set it up correctly  :D
