Scottish Immigrants to USA
« on: Thursday 20 August 09 12:28 BST (UK) »
Hi,  I am tring to find when an ancestor migrated from Scotland to USA.  Her name was Marion McGuckian, but appears to have reverted to her mothers maiden name of Moffat at some stage .   She probably went to USA sometime after 1891.  Does anyone know of any passenger lists I can search  between 1891 and 1902.
                  Thanks   Anne.

Anne,

Have you tried the Ellis Island site?

http://www.ellisisland.org/

There were other ports of entry (i.e. Boston; Portland/Falmouth, Maine, etc), so I would begin by looking at which port your ancestor may have departed.

Here's a taste of the possibilities on the Ellis Island site, if that's where your relative arrived (New York).  It's a good site, and free.

Name of Passenger Residence Arrived Age on Arrival Passenger Record Ship Manifest Ship Image
1. Marion Moffat    Andover, N.J.    1913  56  View View View
2. Marion Moffat    Calderbank, Scotland    1911  3  View View View
3. Marion Moffat    Carluke, Scotland    1909  53  View View View
4. Marion Moffat    Dunfermine, Scotland    1921  22  View View View
5. Marion Moffat    Lesmahagow, Scotland    1911  8  View View View

or maybe:

Mary A. McGuckan arrived from Glasgow in 1895, age 7.

Another great thing about the site, you can see the entire ship's manifest and know who else she may have traveled with.  Sometimes there is info about the destination sponsor (for instance:  Ann Jones, Sister, Dumont, New Jersey) that leads to even more clues.
Pryde, Doig, Paton, Scott, Jack in Fife; Thomson, Barclay, Barr, Steele, Sandilands, Lockie, Gibson in Lanarkshire

Many thanks for helpful advice to my query. I was able to locate my ancestor  on the Ellis island site, which I had never been to before.  It will certainly keep me occupied for a while.   Regards   Anne.
