Petworth Look-Ups
« on: Thursday 20 August 09 16:59 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can be of help.
I am looking for the death of Jane Simmonds - baptised 21.11.1834 at The Independant Chapel, Petworth. Father T.Simmonds, mother S.Simmonds. There is no record of Jane in the 1841 Census so I assume she has died.
Can anyone help in finding Jane's death please.
I also would like to verify that her father, T.Simmonds is Thomas and her mother Sarah.
Many many thanks.

Superfly,

Petworth burial, source PRTS.

23/11/1834  Jane SIMMONDS, aged 1

No mention of parents in the burial register.  Was your Jane 1 year old at baptism?  Would you have expected her to be buried in the Anglican churchyard?

There are a number of baptisms to parents Thomas & Sarah SIMMONDS around the same time; they are the only family of that surname baptising in the Anglican church.

I have no source covering the Independent Chapel.

Hi Stovepipe

Thanks for that piece of information.Yes Jane was 1year old at her baptism and yes I would have expected her burial to be in an Anglican churchyard.I am getting this information from the IGI index and it seems only her and her younger brother Thomas were baptised in the Independent chapel-why this is I do not know. The rest of the family are baptised in the Anglican church.I woud be grateful if you could give me the other family members for that name to see if it matches with what I have got.

Petworth baptisms, parents Thomas & Sarah SIMMONDS.

13/12/1829, William
07/02/1832, Elizabeth   (bu. 07/12/1834 aged 3)
02/04/1834, George
22/07/1838, Ann Bitting
16/09/1848, Henry

Thomas's occupation is varies between Carrier and Waggoner.

There's a George SIMMONDS buried in 1838, but his age is 1 so not a good match (unless the age is mistranscribed?)

Other burials.
Thomas aged 17, 23/04/1852 (could he be the younger brother?)
Thomas aged 72, 22/11/1873

Thanks again for your information.

Just to fill in. According to the IGI and the 1841 and 1851 census's there was
Mary Bap 04/05/ 1828 at Petworth
Thomas Bap 05/02 1835 Petworth Independent Chapel
John 1840 - 1841 and 1851 census. Born Petworth
Robert 1843 - 1851 census
James 1846 - 1851 census
There could possibly be Fanny - born Petworth 1849. I found her in the Birth Marriage and Death Index.

Regarding George. According to the IGI he was born 02.04.1837 which ties in with the death record you mentioned.
You are correct in your assumption re Thomas being the yonger brother.
Re Ann Bitting - her mother's maiden name was Botting - so I assume she was really Ann Botting.
John was named as John Botting in the marriage records.
Looking at the records it is sad to see that Jane was buried 23.11.1834 and her sister Elizabeth was buried 07.12.1834 - just two weeks apart! I'm wondering if they had scarlet fever which I believe was rife at the time.

Hi All
According to the IGI index John Botting Simmonds was married to Jane Sandon at Lurgashall on the 21 Sept 1864. I am trying to find who John's father was .There does not seem to be any record in the BMD index.Any ideas please.

I know that.  Sorry I was in a rush to do som, ething else!  I was trying to say that the marriage is on the freeBMD index under the names I quoted.  You said you could not find it.  Obviously mistranscribed.  Also seems to be registered at Midhurst and Ticehurst which is very odd.  Must be that couple though.
