Gray, Lemon and Chapman Family of Clones, Monaghan, and Belfast
« on: Thursday 20 August 09 23:29 BST (UK) »
Hi,
My mother was Lucinda Elizabeth Gray (nicknamed Linda), born 09/03/1921 in Clones. She was married to Harry Clough. Her parents were Lucinda Isabella Chapman (born 04/04/1899 in Clones, died 08/11/1942 in Clones) and John Gray (born 01/06/c1900 in Belfast, died 27/05/1967 in Clones), who were married on 28/04/1920 in Killevan, Clones, Monaghan. They had two other younger children, Margaret Amelia Gray (nicknamed Peggy, died about 1991) and John Joseph Gray (nicknamed Jack, died about 1992).

John Gray's brothers were Isaac, Charles, Thomas and Henry and his sisters were Clementine and Harriet. Clementine died relatively young and Harriet was nicknamed Ann and married Herbert (Jim) Deeks and she died in 1993 in Harrogate and was born in 1905, I presume in Belfast. Herbert had a sister, Katherine, who was married to Fred William Hicks. Charles was married to Bessie and has one daughter, Maeve, who is married to Trevor Macgowan.

Lucinda Isabella Chapman had nine siblings:

Samuel - killed in the Battle of the Somme, aged 18, died 01/07/1916 and is on the Thiepval Memorial. War record 17934, 9th Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers.
Joseph - emigrated to USA
Anna - possibly had two sons in the USA - unsure of this, my mother filled it in in a book, but this could be Joseph or Anna, she crossed over the lines.
George - bachelor
Margaret - no family
William - married Lily and had Gladys and Bobby in New Zealand.
Amelia - married a Charles Sixsmith I think and had at least 3 kids - Vera, Norman and Violet.
Sophie - died aged 21
Robert - married Harriet and had at least the following children - Esmond, Robert, Wesley, Wilbur, Lily, Lucy and Maud.

I've been able to trace my English ancestors back to the 16th century, but I can't get anywhere with my Irish ancestors as there don't seem to be any records for Ireland. If anyone knows any websites with records for Ireland or if anyone is related, please do not hesitate to contact me, as I would love to find out more about my Irish roots.

John Gray's parents were Thomas Gray and Mary Elizabeth Lemon. Mary's parents were John Lemon and Harriett Williamson, who were from Killycronaghan, Killeevan, Monaghan.

Thanks,
I hope to receive some replies,
David

I am Robert Chapman's grandson.  He had two other living children. Joe and Hilda. All are now dead. He also had a number of children who did not survive infancy.  They moved to Belfast in about 1918, when my father, Wilbur, was 4.

I note your posts on another website.  Harriette Courtney married Robert Chapman. Note the spelling.  In the 1911 census George was living with his older brother in Rockcorry. see http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie./reels/nai003125530/

Hi,
Thanks for your message. It's great to hear from a living relative of the Chapmans!

I have since discovered that the children's parents were Robert Chapman and Margaret Jane Corbett, who married in Belfast in 1883.

With the help of the 1911 census I managed to confirm DOBs for the children:

Robert 1886
John Joseph 1887
Annie Marie 1889
George 1892
Margaret Jane 1893
Samuel Hamilton 1895
Lucinda Isabella 1899
Susan Amelia 1901
William Charles 1903
Martha Sophia 1905

According to the 1911 census they had 11 children, 10 of which were still living. I have found all 10 on the census. 5 were living with the mother. The father was living separately nearby. Samuel was a boarder with the Moffett family. Margaret was living with her uncle, William. Anna was a nurse. George was living with Robert and his wife, as you say.

I've still not found out anything about them emigrating.

I've ordered the parents' marriage certificate, so hopefully I can find out more about this side of the family.

I'd be grateful for any assistance.

Regards,
David
