Mystery to solve - any help appreciated. Sailor missing?
« on: Friday 21 August 09 03:29 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am hoping someone maybe able to point me in the right direction in finding out some more information on the disappearence of my ggrandfather. He was a seaman and a fireman on the ships out of Southampton. in 1921 he walked outof 26 Orchard lane to go to work and was never seen again. my Ggrandmother never knew what happened to him and it is a complete mystery to what happened. About a year ago I was searching on Ellis Island in coming passengers listed as crew on ships into New york and there he was 1921-1923 ; William James paisley aged 43, british citizen. Right name and birthdate and a fireman on ships. he had been to Germany, bermuda and new york back and forth for last 2 years docking in Southampton several times too!!! The last listing is on may 8th 1923 when he was entering new York as crew member from Hamburg on the "Orca" How can I check if he stayed in America or came back to Uk and died here, or something else happened to him. He left my grandmother Rose Paisley with 5 young children the youngest only 1yr old. Would love to find out what happened to him. Can anyone shed any light on this for me????

Had one of my lot do a vanishing act too, must be a ship fireman thing he was one also, left the wife & kids to fend for themselves, story was he might have gone to U.S., though curiously on my grandmothers marriage certificate it states him as being deceased, another of many family mysteries to chase up, not much help I'm afraid but understand the frustration of looking for a missing person
