Ann Halliday b 1825, Belfast to OZ 1841
« on: Friday 21 August 09 05:41 BST (UK) »
Any helpful ideas will be gratefully received.
Ann Halliday dob about 1825 Belfast
Parents John Halliday farmer
Mother Ann Halliday formally Parkhill
Ann Halliday was my father’s grandmother and she lived with his family until her death in Geelong Victoria Australia in 1919.
Ann Halliday went to Australia in about 1841. She would have been about 16 years old.
I can not find info in Australia about how and why she left Ireland and if she travelled with any other family members.
I have Ann Halliday marriage to Samuel Bowler (from Yorkshire)18 Jan1852 Bacchus Marsh in Victoria Australia and where she lived and her 6 children.

Can anyone give me an idea of how I could go about finding information in Ireland about her?
Would she have sailed from Belfast to Australia or would she have to have gone somewhere else first?
Thank you from OZ

Thank you for trying Aghadowey
That is me on OZ.
My friends and family in OZ have not been able to find a ship name or list for around 1841.
The information is better after 1852.
I thought there might be a chance from Ireland.
Is Halliday a common name in Ireland?
Thanks

I posted the link to the Australian tread so that others could see what's already been mentioned about the family. Halliday is a fairly common surname in Northern Ireland.

Thank you aghadowey.
As Halliday is not unusual it may be hard to get information.
I may get lucky.

Belfast is in Co. Antrim and Co. Down really so it might be worth taking a look through surnames on this site just in case there's information that might help-

Hi aghadowey
That is really a good site.
It was very interesting.
I looked through all the names of Halliday.
There are a few John Halliday’s in that site.

There was a John & Henry Halliday of the parish of Kilkeel
It had “in Ballinture; named on a freehold lease of John Rogers, farmer as having a life interest 1819”

There was also
John Halliday of Kilkeel “will dated 1788”
John Halliday of Kilkeel “will probated in 1837”
also
John Halliday of Drumgooland “of Ballyward; will dated 1833”

The Ann Hallidays in the list were born after my Ann and there is no reference to marriage to Ann Parkhill and no mention of Ann Parkhill at all.

I looked up Parkhill and there were two. Both men.
John Parkhill “emigrated to Philadelphia on 'Prosperity' Jun 1775”
James Stilwell Parkhill married  in 1922
So no luck there.

It was worth a try and maybe a link can be made.
