LEIGH Philip circa 1813
« on: Friday 21 August 09 05:43 BST (UK) »
Philip Leigh born around 1813 - I think in England but do not know where. He came out to Australia and was married in Adelaide to Sarah Jane New in 1839. Would anyone know details of the Leigh family?
Thanks, hec

Welcome to rootschat hec.  :)

Gee I think you might need to supply a bit more information in order for anyone to be able to help you.

Firstly, do you have Philip's Australian death certificate? Some will give parent's names and place of origin. Also his immigration records might contain further information about his place of birth.

Does his marrige certificate give his parent's names?

The surname Leigh is more concentrated in the NW around Lancashire, though there are some around Surrey and elsewhere.

Of course this can only be used as a very rough guide.

Hi again Hec and Hi Ruskie  ;D

I will put the marriage record I have posted on Hecs other thread here also. It is a very early South Australian Record

The Holy Trinity Records just provide the date 12 Oct 1839 by the rev Charles Beaumont Howard - Philip Leigh of Adelaide late of Plymouth = Sarah Jane NEW of Adelaide late of Devizes

Cheers Kris  :)

Oh, well, that's useful.  :)

Hi Kris ( ;D), would you say it would be worth hec asking for a birth for Philip on the UK Devon board? Of course he may not have just been living in and not born in Plymouth.  :-\

Hec, how do you know Philip's approximate year of birth?

Yes Ruskie,

I meant to move it yesterday - must have gotten sidetracked. Its in Devon now.

Hec you told me on your other thread that the couple moved to Vic. Do you have their Victorian death certificates which may provide a wealth of information on this couple?

Kris  :)

MMM maybe not a great example of Vic Certs but for $17.50 still worth a look.

Philip LEIGH died 1885 #13405 Pt Melbourne. He was aged 72, father unknown mother unknown.

They had a daughter Sarah Jane in SA - then in Vic I see some unusual names

Eliza LEIGH 1843 Reg NSW #V18433068 27A Melbourne St James CE (parents Phillip and Sarah J) also Vic reg #13376

Alice Mary LEIGH 1845 #14355 Melbourne St James CE (parents Phillip and Sarah Jane)

Philip D LEIGH 1846 reg NSW #V18463432 31A Melbourne, St James CE (parents Philip and Sarah J) and looks like a second entry although says mother Sarah Ann for Philip Dunsterville LEIGH reg Vic #14950

Clara Lydestone LEIGH 1850 #26638 St Peters Melbourne parents Philip and  Sarah Jane

Lydstorm Pevrier LEIGH 1852 #27494 St Peters Melbourne parents Philip and Sarah

Oodles of Lydstones around Devon and even a few Dunstervilles  :-\

Cheers Kris  :)

That'll be him for sure ... died 1885 - parents unknown:-\ Typical.  :(

But on the plus side, some fab names to chase up. Would you hazzard a guess that Lydstorm is meant to be Lydestone? Worth investigating.  :)

Always the way isn't it Ruskie  ::)

Yes I expect LYDSTORM may be wrongly entered.

Very interesting find here

HO107; Piece 271; Book: 8 Folio Page
Gibbons Street
Charles the Martyr
Plymouth

PEREIRA Lydston (F) 59 Y Schoolmaster
LEIGH Lydston (F) 7 Boarder N
and 6 others ditto (no names seem important) aged 9 - 26 and a servant

Lydston PEREIRA is still in Charles the Martyr (9 Bedford Terrace) in 1851 aged 69 widow b Dartsmouth School Mistress
Amelia D SYMONS Neice 37 Widow b Plymouth Professor of Music
Amelia LEIGH Niece 15 Unm Boarder b London

and others

HO107/1878 Folio 379 Page 35

Also note (IGI)

Lysdstone Walker LEIGH bap 3 July 1782 St Savior Dartmouth parents Philip and Eliz  ;D
among other siblings Lynstone had a brother Philip 30 may 1781. The name Featherstone also features in siblings and Hayman so a precedent for unusual names. Looks like Philip baptised 1 Jan 1753 Dartmouth father also Philip
