Penderyn/Hirwaun? - completed.
« on: Sunday 23 August 09 19:19 BST (UK) »
My Mothers Birth Certificate shows the address as 16 Johns Row, Penderyn R.D.  So far as I know she always thought she was born in Hirwaun.  Looking at a map of South Wales they are shown as being two places.  Is this correct, it is hard to tell from such a map and I wondered if anyone with an Ordnance Survey Map or personal knowledge of the area could put me right.  On the Certificate it shows the Registration District as being Merthyr Tydfil in the Sub-district of Aberdare in the Counties of Glamorgan & Brecon.
In the column for "signature and residence of informant of information" it defintely states 16 Johns Row, Penderyn.  Not exactly a life or death situation, but I would appreciate help clearing it up.
Thanks.

Penderyn and Hirwaun are about 2.5 miles apart.  I don't know if this is of any help, but according to GENUKI, the parish of Penderyn was created in 1886 from the parishes of Aberdare in Glamorgan, and Penderyn in Breconshire. Nowadays the Breconshire part is in the county of Powys.

I have had a quick look at the modern maps of both Penderyn and Hirwaun and unfortunately can't find a Johns Row in either place.  If I get a chance to look at the old 'County Series' maps I'll post again.

wilcoxon & greensleeves,
Thanks for that info.  In the early days of my family search I visited
Hirwaun as I was of the opinion that this was the birthplace of my Mother.  There was a 16 Johns Row and at the time my husband took a couple of pictures.  Now I wonder if I was in the right place when I look at the copy of the Birth Certificate which does not mention Hirwaun at all.  Perhaps I should get in touch with the local authorities in the region to see if there is an explantion. I know there must be others who have had a similar experience.  In the beginning when visiting places or speaking to relatives there were questions which should have been asked which were overlooked.
I guess this is one of the things which make genealogy so interesting and frustrating at the same time.
