Cochrans of Paisley
« on: Sunday 23 August 09 22:02 BST (UK) »
I've done quite a bit of digging on my grandmothers paternal line, but have now almost reached a dead end  ??? and would appreciate any help or advice you could give me.

I've got quite a bit of information on William Cochran B 27/06/1798 and his wife Elizabeth Knox.  Williams first son was called Allan, which leads me to believe that Williams father was Allan Cochran born circa 1772 in Paisley (married to Janet Lyle).  But I'm struggling to trace any farther back.

I've found an Allan and Adam Cochran (twins of John Cochran and Janet Adam of Neilston, Renfrew) but am not sure if this is the correct link.

Any information which could help, or ideas on where to check next would be gratefully received!

Hi Elaine447 - thanks for the info - I've sourced BC's for Lyle and Jean - but no indication of what happened next.  I'm also aware of another 3 siblings -

William B 27/05/1798
Allan B 16/03/1803
Janet B 16/03/1805

It would be interesting to find out what happened to Lyle, Jean and Janet - so far I've drawn a blank  ???.

Kia Ora Turramurra
I saw this post and was intrigued.
I also have a Cochran from Pasiley marrying a Nicol - but much later on - my ggrandfather James Cochran married Margaret Nicol 14 June 1878 at Paisley. Our Cochrans seem to have came from Ayr the generation before (lots of Michaels).

I have hit a real brick wall with the Nicol side though. Margaret was born Nov 1859 at Paisley - father James Nicol and mother Elizabeth Paton married 1857 at Paisley. They are both in the weaving mills. James' father is given as Miller ( or Millar) Nicol on his, (James') marriage certificate, mother Margaret Robertson. I  have Millar (only one) on the 1841,51,61 and 71 Census (a weaver again), saying he was born in Paisley (ages vary about a little).  On death cert says he died 1878 aged 76. But there the trail goes cold - can't find any birth or any clue as to his parents. Millar's eldest son at home 1841 is Walter aged 13 (I've found 8 children of theirs).

I was wondering if you have come across any of these people in your researches.
I've been trying to find them for 30 years now! (Well, not all the time!).
I'd be really interested to hear from you.

Cheers from just down the road - well, in New Zealand! :-*

Hey Turramurra - I've got an Alexander Gillespie, son of William Gillespie  (born circa 1845) and Mary Paton (again circa 1845) - marrying Agnes Cochran (born 1869) in Paisley.

Could be a connection?
