Saxton family in Medway area
« on: Monday 24 August 09 17:32 BST (UK) »
Hi!
I am trying to find details of a  Saxton family  in the Gillingham/ Chatham area.
In particular a James John Saxton (1861 - 1903) and his wife Harriet Bowman. James John was a butcher and was born in New Brompton.
I believe his father was a William Saxton (1812 - 1883) I do seem to be having trouble locating them in many of the censuses.
Is there anyone connected to this family in the loop who may be able to help me?
many thanks.

Which censuses are you looking for?

In 1881 James is a nephew living with Alfred and Alice Williams and family in Gillingham. In 1891 he and Harriet are in Gillingham. In 1871, theres a James Saxton grandson age 8 with a William and Emma Saxton + other children. Emma is only 39 though so could be the 2nd wife as the eldest child is 23. Will check 1861 census.....

In 1861 the wife is Emma, but in 1851 the wife is Mary Ann.... Does his marriage cert say his father is William? (in 1851 there is a son William age 16 living with the William b.c1812) Probably best to get the birth certificate, have you seen this possible birth -

James John Saxton December 1861 Medway Vol 2a Page 355

Fanthorpe/Hall/Driffill/Storm - Lincolnshire

Hello, thanks for your very helpful reply. I guess it was because James John was living with his Uncle that I didn't spot him in the 1881 census.

I have tried without success to find him (via Ancestry.co.uk) in the 1901 census, maybe I am doing something wrong. I have also tried the 1901 using his son's name (Ernest Charles Saxton) but still no luck there.

I think your theory about William Saxton (b 1812) having married twice is correct .. I believe from family lore that there were a total of approx 15 children from both marriages.. (phew)

Very many thanks for the time and trouble you have taken to help me, I appreciate it.

Elsbeth

Thank you very very much .. how did you do that?

yes I'm sure that's them as I remember an "Aunty Ethel" many years later.

Isn't it strange how THEY put their children's names down incorrectly .... what chance do we have all these years later?

many thanks once again, Elsbeth

Hi

I can't post 1911 because of copyright but I just put in Saxton living Gillingham into the 1911 search and these names came up together
James John Saxton
Ethel Harriet May Saxton
Alfred John Saxton
Ernest Charles Saxton
Edward Walter Michael Bowman Saxton

so the 1901 certainly looks very promising.

If the family were C of E then you may find some events in the online parish registers at Medway Cityark if you haven't done so already http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/

.
In particular a James John Saxton (1861 - 1903)

The James John that died in 1903 was age 11 as per freebmd.
I wondered how I'd found him in 1911  ;D
