Hi I was wondering if any one would be able to help regarding where to look for list of watchmakers approx 1840's london, my gg grandfather William Gillett listed in census as watchmaker I was also told by an eldery relative that a watch / clock that he worked on was in the maritime museum!!! not sure whether to believe it or not? but have to try to find out ,have emailed the nmm and waiting for reply but was wondering if any one could help me find were i could find out who he worked for any help would be grateful thanks

The book was published 1976 (not sure if it's been reprinted) but you could check to see if your local reference library has a copy. The information is very basic (no further details for William Gillett) and is in alphabetical order. Data was compiled from sources like old directories.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Alex-01.

William Gillett (1800-1883) Watchmaker is also my GGG Grandfather through his daughter Esther Gillett(1840-1913).
I found a reference to him in the 1852 London Post Office Directory on www.historicaldirectories.org -
Gillett Wm watch & clockmaker 117 Old Street, St Lukes. See attahment.

Can I ask how you are descended from him?

Hi thanks for all the help, i have asked my library to get the book for me. Hi Quilt603 I think i have been in contact with you on ancestry site, william was my ggg grandfather and connected through his granddaughter Elizabeth mary ann gillett, I am trying to find out if there is a watch/clock that was made by him at the National Maritime museum which an eldery relative is adament is true, I have emailed them and waiting for a reply. As he was watchmaker there may be some truth in it!!!! it's worth a try I will let you know on Ancestry site Pat
