Is this a play or theatre performance? *COMPLETED, thank you all*
« on: Saturday 29 August 09 22:25 BST (UK) »
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but has anyone seen anything like these two photos before?   They seem to be of a play or performance.  Not sure who or when and what is the split room all about???

Any ideas welcome.

KateW.

Hi Kate

Fascinating!

They seem to be showing "how the other half lives" or social injustice.

In the first one the young lady is living an affulent life, and is singing for pleasure in her pleasant home in St James. The woman singing in St Giles is obviously singing for her supper in the poorer district of St Giles.

In the second one, much the same idea -  the young girl in her beautiful dress, probably never gives a thought to the poor woman who has made it, and in what sort of home and conditions  she lives.

That's my interpretation, anyway!

Judy  ;)
Best wishes, Judy :-))

As Judy say, I see it as a comment on social divisions in Victorian times. A visual attempt at social comment as Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell did in their novels. Also check out Hogarth's 'cartoons'

Judy is correct. They have the weaver and the maker picture at the hulton getty picture archive...(http://www.gettyimages.com) with a bit of info about it.  it is called "Rich and Poor".

Oh, that's fascinating.  Thanks to you all , Judy, Gadget and Milly for your replies.  Do you think this is just a print that the family had or is it their version of it?

People bought them and had a special viewer to view them on...  so lots of people would buy the same picture (or set of pcitures)   - a little like the viewmaster that came later.

There is a little info here - I will see if there is a better site
