41st Reg
« on: Monday 31 August 09 14:30 BST (UK) »
James WIMBUSH's occupation is given as 41st Reg on his RC marriage and the RC baptisms of his children in Ireland.
He went to the West Indies c1857-1860 (4th child born 1857 Ireland, 5th child born 1860 Trinidad), so I suspect he went there as part of his occupation.
By 1861 he (and family) were back in England.
They seem to have moved about a bit. James' movements can be tracked as:
1819 - born in Upper Boddington, Northamptonshire, England
1848 - married Co Cork (+ 1st child), Ireland
1850 - 2nd child in Co Mayo, Ireland
1854 - 3rd child Co Cork, Ireland
1857 - 4th child in Co Waterford, Ireland
1860 - 5th child in Trinidad
1861 - census Leamington Priors, Warwickshire, England

Can anyone tell me where I could find more about this 41st Reg?
Would there be any surviving records?

The 41st do seem to have been very heavily engaged overseas, so the Welsh connection at that time may not have been in existence - after 1881 regiments became associated with places.

I dont know how they decided who became what....the 40th Regiment (previously a Somerset Regiment), became the 1st Battalion Prince of Wales Volunteers (South Lancashire Regt.), so it appears a bit random!

Had a look at the RRW site that gortonboy suggested and there is a good timeline for you to check with
http://www.rrw.org.uk/museums/cardiff/fact_sheets/1.htm

From that you should be able to identify which company he was with, as there were only 2 in Trinidad!

Regards
