Hi and welcome to Rootschat

It's difficult to help without names etc so perhaps if you told us what you have and what it is you are looking for - we can have a go

I can just say that if you know his full name and birthyear - you can look for the birth registration on freebmd which will at least give you the county and area in which the birth was registered.

The reference number will also enable you to order a copy of the birth cert which will give his parents names and mothers maiden name.  If he was born after the September qtr of 1911 his mothers maiden name will be shown on the GRO entry

Those details will help find his parents marriage etc

Please do not post the names of anybody who is possibly still living

have you found his Birth Index entry - the Registration District may help.

Frinstance, if he's born post 1911/12, his mothers maiden name will be shown in the Index and from that and his surname (if not the same as Mums) you may be able to find a marriage. Get that Cert (and his Birth Cert too for completeness) and you can then work backwards.

If you dont have that info, theres stuff like Electoral Rolls, Ratepayers details etc etc. - and of course his own marriage - the Cert will name his Father (most times) and that will help get back on the tracj shown above

 ;)  Welcome !

sadly not in 99% of cases .... you will need to go to a Borough / County Records Archive or the main local Library may have early 20th C info .. .....

Hi moment - welcome to rootschat. I looked at your previous posts and I can't see a letter that you wrote to Edna.  :-\
Could you please copy and paste what you wrote onto this post? Or provide a link to what you wrote ...

Without knowing a little more about James, my first questions to you would be, "Where did you get his name and birth year from?" and "Do you have his marriage certificate?"

FreeBMD has a few James Frederick Bakers born between 1878 and 1880 but I'll wait till you provide a bit more information before I continue to search. This is a good place to start:
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

But be aware that just because you find someone of the right name born in the right year, doesn't mean it is the right person. You need other checks to confirm this, such as censues. For example if you had his marriage certificate, his father should be named, so then you can go ahead and search the 1881 census (which is free to search) to find a son James with a father "X".

hi ruskie and thanks for your reply.james frederick was an older parent by the time he had my aunt-who gave me the date of his marriage.so as she was kind of youngish when he died she didnt know much else about him like where he came from-sad isnt it!she is around 76 now so cant get a whole lot more out of her.no i dont have the marriage cert but will be getting it soon. trouble is am a little disabled and have to go quite a way for the correct registry office to buy the cert i need!(apparently i was at the wrong reg offices the other day!so i cant think you`ll find out anything much without me gwetting that cert first? ;)
