Alexander Fin(d)lay b.c.1888 at Chirnside.
« on: Thursday 03 September 09 09:39 BST (UK) »
Hello.
Can anyone trace the birth/baptism of Alexander Finlay please - c.1888 at Chirnside?
I have his information from the 1911 census where his father was Peter Finlay b.c 1865 at Eyemouth.
I think he might have had a sister named Mary b.c.1890-`Scotland`, with the same mother.

Alexander (and possibly Mary) was a son from Peter's 1st marriage and I would like to know the maiden name of his mother in order to trace her marriage to Peter. He was a widower in 1901.
I have checked the `scotlandspeople` site with negative results.
Any help or advice welcome. Thank you.
frek.

Hi Frek

Could this be Peter in 1891:

James Finlay 28, miller, b. Eyemouth, Berwickshire
Margaret Finlay 26. b. Hutton, Berwickshire
Elizabeth Finlay 3, b. Chirnside
William Finlay 2 Months b. Ayton
Peter Finlay 25, brother, platelayer, b. Eyemouth, Berwickshire

Address: Hillburn Cottages, Ayton Berwickshire

Can't tell from the transcript what his marital status was unfortunately, only the original image on SP would confirm.

Peter's 1901 census entry in Berwick:

Peter Finlay 36, b. Scotland
Alexander Finlay 13 b. Scotland
Mary Finlay 11 b. Scotland
William Finlay 9 b. Tweedmouth
Peter Finlay 6 b. Tweedmouth
Catharine Thompson 61, mother in law, b. Scotland

RG13; Piece: 4845; Folio: 52; Page: 20

There is a marriage showing in 1891 in Bunckle, Berwickshire for a Peter Finlay and a Jane Thomson, which might be connected. This would perhaps indicate that Alexander and Mary were born before parents were married. There is this possible entry in 1891:

Alexander Thompson 56, farm servant b. Tweed, Berwick - On -
Catherine Thompson 51  b. Hutton, Berwickshire
Jane B Thompson 22, farm servant b. Hutton, Berwickshire
William Thompson 18  b. Hutton, Berwickshire
Catherine Thompson 13 b. Buckle Bewickshire
Alexander Thompson 3, grandson b. Chirnside, Berwickshire
Mary Jane Thompson 1, granddaughter, b. Coldingham, Berwickshire

Address: Farm of Billiemains, Bunkle and Preston, Berwickshire

Thank you Monica - I have just traced the 2 children. They were Catherine's illegitimate children. She later married Peter Finlay.
