Grays Thurrock Electoral Roll 1937/8
« on: Thursday 03 September 09 11:34 BST (UK) »
Is there anyone who would be willing to look up something for me in the Grays electoral roll 1937/8?

The person I am trying to locate is Peter Johnson.  I believe that he was living in a bungalow on the outskirts of Grays in 1938/9.  I don't have an address.  I spoke to someone at Grays Thurrock library who confirmed that they do have electoral registers for 1937/8 but that they are in street name order.  So it would be a matter of ploughing through and seeing if there is a Peter Johnson on the list.  This would be for the Grays area, not for the whole of Grays Thurrock.  The other possibility is whether he might be in the residents section of any of the Grays directories.  I believe that he was an engineer, possibly a mining engineer.

I would be so grateful if anyone could do this search.  Many thanks for reading my message.

Hi Louisa Maud,

Many thanks for your message.

I don't know the answer to that question generally.  But I spoke to a librarian at Grays Thurrock library and he said that they had electoral registers for 1937/8 but not for 1939 or the war years.   :)

For my particular enquiry re Peter Johnson, I've so little information to go on that the electoral roll could provide me with the clue I'm looking for.

The Essex Record Office website says that the electoral registers were not prepared for 1940-1944. It also implies that no copies are kept at Essex RO so Grays Library is the only place to go.
I rarely go that way but, if noone else offers, I'll try to bear you in mind

:)Many thanks Clincher2.  I spoke to a librarian at Grays who said they had the electoral registers for 1937/8.  It may be that I can go there myself in October - just the small matter of organizing family and dog! So I'll stay in touch and let you know if I can go there myself.

I have just heard that I may need to go to Grays on Tuesday 15/9. If so, I'll try this look-up then. Hopefully the population of Grays was much less in 1937/8 than it is now. That will be the only year I will have time for
