Hi
Not sure if anyone will be able to help or may have the following on their tree.
My g.grandmother was one ELLEN SIGGINS, she had brothers Patrick and Thomas and one sister MARY born 1879. All were born in St Helens, Lancashire, England. Their father died when they were all young. Family stories seem to indicate that their mother may have had difficulty coping with four young children and MARY went to live with a family in LIVERPOOL. The family surname was SMITH and the man of the house could have been something to do with Tug Boats. Family stories also indicate that Mary moved to Canada (possibly Montreal) at some point.
I have found on a 1891 Census for Liverpool one Mary Smith, born St Helens, Lancashire, living with a John Smith (Shipsmith) and his wife Ann (they were in their early 60's). They lived in Willoughby Street, West Derby, Liverpool. I have traced John and Ann Smith back to 1861 and they did have children of their own (Samuel, Alice Robert - Schoolmaster and Elizabeth). On a 1901 Census for Liverpool I have found a MARY SMITH born St Helens, Lancashire, married and living with her husband Frederick Smith (Police Constable) in West Derby, Liverpool. I have also found a possible marriage for 1897 for a Mary Smith (Smith being her maiden name) marrying a Frederick Smith. Coming further up to date my mum remembers her mother taking her to visit some people in Liverpool when she was a little girl around 1934/35 and the surname of this family was SMITH and the man of the house was the Captain of a Tug boat. Is it possible these were descendents from the SMITH family?
I just wondered if anyone had a MARY SMITH from Liverpool on their tree and if any of the above sounds familiar I would be most grateful if they could contact me or if there are any census records or any records for a MARY and Frederick SMITH from Liverpool.
Any assistance or advice would be very much appreciated or please contact me if any of the above sounds familiar.
Kind regards.
Victoria.
