Hi,

there is a Wm. H. Mayne arriving 4 Apr 1900 on the Tunisian, Liverpool to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

His age was 32 and he was a shoemaker.

If he was back in England for the 1901 census, he gave up looking for gold pretty quickly   :)

thanks for reply, i had seen that entry on find mypast, but cant tell if it was my relative, occupation is difficult to tell, as he did several things. it does seem strange if it was as it was a long way to go and as you said he gave up quick. not sure if there is anything else to search , there doesnt seem to be an entry for a return, one of those mysteries , thankyou anyway.

thankyou . as i dont know what year he went this makes it harder i guess to find
i can only go by the years he was on the census 1891 and 1901 , so somewhere in between.  he may have used a variation on his name, as the census either call him henry mayne or william mayne. or both. will keep trying to look though.

The Cariboo gold rush got under way in1860; the Klondike rush in 1897.

So it would seem he went for the Klondike !   Maybe he never got there ?  It was a hard, hard trek up snow covered passes, with prospectors having to carry everything they needed on their backs ... food, tents, tools ... and many never made it.
