1871 Census, LOWTHER
« on: Friday 04 March 05 12:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Can anyone help with a lookup on 1871 census for George Lowther no idea of age but he was in Goole 1868 shown as a mariner at his sons wedding in Thorne.

Also interested in the family Lowther on 1861 census, of which George is the head.  His son is William aged 20ish born Selby, also became a mariner, thats all I have to go on, can any of you guys work wonders? Could be Selby or Goole!

Many thanks

Hiya,

I had a look at all the George Lowthers of an age that could have a son in 1868 of marriagable age but none have an occupation of mariner.

There could have been a change of occupation or he could have died in the intervening 3 years or he could be at sea or mis transcribed.

Another avenue is finding the possible wife i.e. mother of the married chap.

What is the name and age of the son getting married?  And do you have him on the 1871 census if so where?

Cheers,
PAm

Hi Pam,

Have the son on 1871 census in Goole, William aged 29 with his wife Emma, can only think I should ask if anyone can look at the 1861 census to see if they can find George Lowther.

Using what clues I can.  I see William is born in Selby.

There is a George Lowther of Selby as follows...

RG10/4734 ED 9 f 107 p 8

Selby  Yorkshire
St James Terrace
George Lowther    64 Head Mar Home & Land Agent Selby, Yorkshire
Grace Lowther    66 Wife Mar North Duffield, Yorkshire
George L Curtis    21 Great Nephew  unmar  Clerk to Home & Land Agent Selby, Yorkshire
Arthur Curtis    10 Great Nephew Selby, Yorkshire
Hannah Lazenby    23 Servant Drax, Yorkshire

It maybe worth trying to find this family in 1861 to see if George was then a mariner?  There is no IGI I can see for William in Selby and a lot of 1837 births aren't registered.  Best of luck with your search.  ;D

Interesting reading the deaths of William, George and Grace Lowther. They are in my family. I wondered if anyone was able to look up the baptism of George in 1806 at Selby to find the parents names (I believe his mother was Esther) Were there any other siblings of George?
Thanks

Hi,

If you have a look on familysearch, there's a George Lowther born (or should it be baptised) on 30/6/1806 in Selby, father George Lowther.

Interestingly there's a marriage for George Lowther born 1773 to a Esther Walton born 1778 on 25/11/1800 in Selby.

Also during my limited search there was a death listed for a George Lowther on 30/5/1803 age 70 (born 1733) surely has to be related. Could well be more names that will interest you.

Hope it helps
Kev.

Just had another quick look checking for possible siblings and the following are possibles, one interestingly lists both parents.

Mary Lowther 8/1/1802 parents George & Esther Wolton.
Frances 1/5/1804 father George
George 30/6/1806 father George
Sarah 15/12/1808 father George
Anne 28/8/1811 father George.

Not sure how many George Lowthers there are in Selby at the time, but these have to be worth a look.
