Armstrong. Parish Registers of Dean, Cumberland
« on: Friday 04 September 09 18:37 BST (UK) »
I am seeking information on the birth of my ggg-grandfather Andrew Armstrong (1773) born in the Crosscanonby area of Cumberland and would like to request a lookup from anyone who has access to the parish registers for Dean, or any other reference to him in other parish registers in this area.

many thanks in anticipation.

Mary

Geoff, you're the expert but Dean feels a long way from Crosscanonby. And Crosscanonby was probably the parish church for Maryport back then.

Hi marymint39 and welcome!

If he was from Dean, it's likely he was a child of Andrew ARMSTRONG who had several children bap there around that time (but not apparently an Andrew)-

1760 George
1762 Mary
1765 Isaac
1771 Ann
1774 Jane
1777John

or a son of John ARMSTRONG
1763 John
1765 Jonathan
1766 Elizabeth
1768 Peter

What were the children's names of your Andrew?
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Hi Geoff,

Many thanks for taking the time to reply.    Andrew A.  noted his parish as Crosscanonby when he married Isabella Sanderson at Dalston Parish church in 1801, but must have returned to his own parish because his first son Charles was born in Bridekirk and following two sons John and William in Papcastle.    My gg-grandfather David, fourth son, was born in Dalston and following children; Andrew, George, Mary Ann,Jane and Isaac all born in Unthank, Dalston. where the family remained.  Andrew  died in 1829. I have researched this family for many years and have just had a article published in the Cumbria Family History Newsletter (Feb.2009) .  I have looked at the parish records for Bridekirk/Papcastle/Crosscanonby and also the Cockermouth BT's without success, and so have turned my interest towards the outlying parishes.   Although I have hit the proverbial brick wall with Andrew's birth record, I do have a gut feeling that this family in the Dean parish are close to my Armstrong family.      As I live in Anglesey, it is very difficult to visit Cumbria and my local LDS church has ceased to provide a FHC, so I am grasping at straws and am
grateful for any help.

regards

Mary
