Good afternoon to the list.
I am interested in a family of MARTIN's who lived in Austerfield circa 1865 to around 1940.
Charles William MARTIN (born +/- 1828) married a Caroline LAMBERT. Caroline born around 1832 came from Ranskill, Notts. and was the daughter of John LAMBERT and Mary COLTON.
I have been unable to determine Charles' origin. He appears on the 1851 Census in Ordsall, and gives his origin as Southampton. However, in 1861 when he appears on the census in New England, Peterborough he gives his place of origin as Stenton, Warwickshire.
Helpfully in the 1871 census (Austerfield) he is shown at the very end of the enumerators return as "1 Railway Engine driver absent on duty" and by 1881 (Austerfield) Caroline is shown as a widow.
Charles and Caroline had a total of 7 children (according to her information on the 1911 Census). I have only been able to identify 6.
1) John Walker MARTIN born 01 Jul 1852 in Barrow Haven, Lincolnshire, baptised 25 Jul 1852, St. Peter's Church, Barrow upon Humber. Married Emma MASON, St. Peter & St Paul's Church, Gringley on the Hill, 18 May 1874. Died after 1911. They had 6 children a) Herbert (Clayworth) 1875, b) Walter (Gringley) 1878, c) John William (Gringley) 1880, d) Fred (Gringley) 1883, e) Lillie (Gringley) 1885 and f) Arthur (Gringley) 1887. John Walker MARTIN was a Carpenter/Joiner and had served his apprenticeship in Gringley with his Uncle Thomas WALKER. Thomas WALKER married Caroline's elder sister Elizabeth LAMBERT.
2) Thomas MARTIN born 01 Apr 1854 in Doncaster, Yorkshire WR. Married Louisa MORRELL 11 Oct 1875 in St. Helena's Church, Austerfield. Thomas and Louisa had two children a) Emily MARTIN born 1876 (Austerfield) and b) Sarah Ann MARTIN born 1878 (Austerfield) died 1893 (Bradford Yorks WR). Thomas died in September 1877 from a stomach ulcer before his second daughter was born. His widow Louisa went on to marry Charles CAPSTICKS in 1879.
3) George Henry MARTIN born 25 Nov 1856 in Bawtry, Yorks WR. He emigrated to Sydney, Australia in 1877. He married Hannah Rebecca TOWNSEND on 25 Dec 1879 in Richmond, NS. They had eight children. a) Mabel born 1880 (Liverpool NSW), b) Caroline born 1882 (Bindogundra NSW), c) Walter born 1885 (Cobar NSW), d) Horace born 1887 (Marrickville NSW), e) George Donald Lambert born 1889 (Leichardt NSW), f) Alice born 1891 (Gisborne, NewZealand), g) Emily born 1894 (Lewisham NSW), and h) Frank born 1896 (Lewisham NSW). George Henry MARTIN died 1941 in Sydney NSW.
4) Walter Lambert MARTIN (my Great Great Grandfather) born 19 Feb 1859, New England, Peterborough. Married Mary Ann HUTCHINSON 29 Jan 1880, All Saint's Church, Mattersey, Notts. Walter and Mary Ann had five children. a) Emily Mary born 1881 in Austerfield. Emily Mary married a Norman BILBROUGH they had at least one son Walter and emigrated to Canada in 1911. b) Thomas Henry Hill MARTIN born 1883 at Hooton Pagnell (near Rotherham), he married Clara MOSS in Harrogate in 1909. c) George Lambert MARTIN (my Great grandfather) born 26 Dec 1884 in Hemsworth Yorks WR. Married Annie Tongue in Harrogate in 1906. They had three children, i) George Walter MARTIN, born 1906 (Lincoln), ii) Randolph Lambert MARTIN (Grandfather) born 1910 (Bradford Yorks WR), and iii)Ethel May MARTIN born 1920 (Mansfield). George Lambert MARTIN died in 1967 in Forest Town, Notts. iv) Norah Veronica MARTIN born 1892 in Sandal Magna, Yorks WR. She married John DODSWORTH in Leyburn (Reg Dist) in 1919 and died in 1928. v) Ethel May MARTIN born 1896 Sandal Magna, Yorks. WR, married John ELLIOTT. She died in 1970 in Otley, Yorkshire.
In 1860 Charles William MARTIN and Caroline LAMBERT married at the Register Office in Peterborough. His father's name is shown as "John" - again really useful.....
5) Charles William MARTIN born 1861 in New England, Peterborough, Married Adelaide WRIGGLESWORTH in 1880 (Doncaster). Charles and Adelaide had five children. a) Thomas Christopher born 1881 (Adwick on Dearne), b) Edith born 1883 (Adwick on Dearne) died 1898 (Barnsley). c) Beatrice Elizabeth born 1886 (Moorthorpe), d) George Henry born 1888 (Worsbrough), and e) Eveline May born 1893 (Worsbrough). Charles William MARTIN died in 1923 (Barnsley Reg Dist).
6) Finally, Philip Isaiah MARTIN born 1868 in Austerfield, married Elizabeth BROCKSOM in Halifax (Reg Dist) in 1888
Philip Isaiah and Elizabeth had four children. a) Charles Alfred Martin born 1896 (Sandal Magna), Thomas Victor born 1896 (Guiseley), Selina Ann born 1901 (Harrogate) but baptised in Austerfield. Nellie born 1903 (Austerfield).
In 1911 Philip Isaiah is shown as a Fruiterer and Fish Merchant, with an address of Carr House. Philip died in 1943 (Don Valley Reg Dist).
Does anyone out there have any connection to this family. Can anyone tell me what happened to Charles William MARTIN. There are no obvious deaths in the GRO index and no burial at Austerfield. Caroline lived to a grand age of 82 years in 1914 and was buried in Austerfield in the same grave as her son Thomas.
Any help, suggestions, links, would be gratefully received. I have been batting against the brick wall with Charles for over 20 years.
