A Family In Garvald
« on: Thursday 10 September 09 22:54 BST (UK) »
I have a James C Tait b1846 in Garvald, East Lothian, Scotland

I have found his family in the 1851 and 1861 census where i found his parents were;

Thomas Tait b1811
Margaret b 1814

I then found an extracted record on IGI from 1839 in Garvald for a Thomas Tait and Margaret Craise marriage.

How do i go about jumping back another generation with this family? I have looked at the marriage entry in the parish records for this marriage but it does not reveal any more information whatsoever.

Can anyone give me any information about this atall?

Were Thomas & Margaret also born in Garvald or elsewhere?

Have you checked the IGI at www.familysearch.org for possible baptisms

There is a Margaret Craise 1814 Stirling and an 1815 Edinburgh

I have no information to say they are born anywhere unfortunately. I have viewed the transcribed census' for 1851 and 1861 but it doesnt show birth places for those people. Any ideas of finding out that info?

Yes they do - both the 1851 and 1861 show Garvald for Thomas and Spott, Haddington for Margaret

Ahh yes i see, i was viewing the transcribed version for James only, makes sense. Being unfamiliar with Scotland makes it a little harder, i think i need to consult google maps. See if any of the IGI entries are close to Spott then. Thankyou for you assistance.

Hi timmle,

This looks a likely baptism for Thomas on http://www.freereg.org.uk/.

Thomas Taite, b. 10th January 1811, bapt. 20th January 1811 at Garvald, son of Alexander Taite, shoemaker, and Jean Turbul - witnesses Thomas Ramsay and Archibald Coltman

In the MIs for Garvald, there is the same family:

"Alexr TAIT 10.1.1847 78y for 40y elder of the parish church of Garvald, wife Jane TURBULL 28.2.1858 84y, son Alexr tailor Garvald d. 10.4.1868 51y (wife Martha S. HENDERSON d. West Saltoun 30.1.190[3 or 8] 91y)"

Have you got the 1841 entry for the family? It can be found on http://www.freecen.org.uk/. Thomas, Margaret and 1 year old Hellen are listed as Teit, while likely mother and sister to Margaret (both named Hellen) are under Craes.

There is a sister to Margaret and Helen on the IGI.

Janet Craise, b. March 6th 1812 Whittinghame - parents James Craise and Helen Swan

Both Helens show on the 1851 census:

Address: Garvald, Haddingtonshire
Helen Craise, head, wid., 64, inn keeper, b. Longformacus, Berwickshire
Helen Craise, dau., unm., 42, inn keeper's daughter, b. Whittinghame (blind)
Elizabeth McDonald, serv., unm., 19, house servant, b. Dunbar

Helen Craise (nee Swan) died 1859 in Garvald. The d.c. can be checked for more information at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

Thank you so much for all this information, i will defintely input all this into my work in progress tree when i get home tonight.

I was wondering when you referred to 'MI's' what it means. Just curious as i am looking to continue the research and would love to familiar with all the different sources to help me along.

Thankyou once again.
