Thank you for that Suz.
The Mary Ann Cook I mentioned was shownas `independant  means` and was recorded at Little Cornard, Suffolk.  She had her daughtr with her.  This person is related to us and is the earliest Cook we can find.

The Mary Ann Cook I mentioned was shown as `independant  means` and was recorded at Little Cornard, Suffolk.  She had her daughter with her.  This person is related to us and is the earliest Cook we can find.  We believe that the daughter Harriet was illegitimate.  If Mary Ann is a sibling of those mentioned by you it seems that the daughters were `looked after` by the Parents and the Sons had to work for a living.  I would love to be able to prove that those Cooks mentioned on the 1841 Census are a complete family unit (including my Mary Ann) but without any evidence of births and parentage this will not happen.

Have you any suggestions.

I have checked in White's of 1844 as nearest to the dates mentioned and

John King Cook was the landlord of the Chequers Inn in Boxford.

He is also listed as a blacksmith - often the Inn was really the domain of the wife and the husband followed his own occupation.

Hello again.

I have now checked out the 1841-1861 census forms and it appears that -

John King Cook had a wife Mary, and children:
John bn. 1826 (he became an Innkeeper too)- was a butcher
Edgar bn. 1826- was a blacksmith
Eliza bn. 1821
Jane bn. abt. 1821/22.

So we have a family unit with these people.

My Mary Ann  Cook bn. 1815 in Boxford. (of independant means) could be another daughter if Mary gave birth to her when she was 19 or thereabouts.

I have no other leads regarding Cooks in Boxford around 1815.

Doh!

Just realised I forgot to say that The Chequers Inn (which we can remember as a pub) was not in Boxford itself, but in the hamlet of Stone Street.

The hamlet and the village are now separated by the Boxford by-pass road.

(This road has been in the news as a British comedian Jimmy Carr was caught speeding along the by-pass in his Bentley motor car earlier this year - the case was heard yesterday at Sudbury Magistrates Court).
