Burial 1763 St. Thomas, Portsmouth
« on: Friday 11 September 09 13:21 BST (UK) »
Hi Rootschatters  ;D

Wondered if any of you kind folk could help me out with this fella:-

William Jewer, buried 22 June 1763 St. Thomas, Portsmouth. (info from NBI)

I am trying to find out his age. I was wondering if any one has access to the parish records, if there would be more info available regarding William, for instance, how old he was when he died?

I have reached a dead end with him, as I have no idea how old he was I can't work any further backwards. He was married in 1748 and had children but no way of knowing if he was married before and no further clues fron the IGI. He died without leaving a will (have found documents relating to the administration of his estate) however still no idea as to age!

Any info, or suggestions, gladly received!!

Many thanks,
Tamar  :)

Hi Tamar,

Having searched this register myself, I can tell you that prior to 1812, it is rare to find an age recorded.  The same might also be said for most other parish registers at this date  :(

His widow died in 1808, but no age recorded.

The best estimate of a birth date is probably 1725, give or take a few years.  I would not expect Catherine/Kitty to have been much younger than about 20 when she married, perhaps William a little older.   There don't seem to be any suitable candidates for William born in Hamsphire that show up.

Not that much help, I'm afraid.

Thanks Nell  :)

I'd reached the same conclusions as you with guestimating his age according to possible age at marriage.
Will have to accept that sometimes that elusive info is just not available as it doesn't exist  :)
