Congratulations Sherwood - you've found GGG-grandparents and GGGG-grandparents! A few tidbits you may have discovered already, but, just in case:

1. Abel Pentney married Marry Thurston in No. Elmham. Two dates are given in IGI: 7 Apr 1797 and 22 Apr 1797

2. John Pentney married Rosetta Barwick in No. Elmham, 29 Jun 1837 (BMD).

3. John possibly died Q1 1877, Walsingham

4. Looks as if, in 1881, James J. Pentney was married to Lydia, b. abt 1841, Kent. Their children were Eliza (age 11), George (age 8) and William (age 10mo.) Eliza and Geo. were born in Peterboro, Northamton, and William in Carlton, Nottingham, where the census took place. (James was born in Lynn Nfk)

5. Children of Abel and Mary:

  • Mary, ch 27 Oct 1801, No. Elmham
Lydia, b. abt 1803, No. Elmham
Peter, ch 28 Sep 1807, No. Elmham
Frances (f), ch 1 Nov 1809, No. Elmham
Philip, ch 26 Mar 1813, No. Elmham
William, ch 11 Jul 1816, No. Elmham
James, ch 25 May 1818, No. Elmham

(From IGI, and Norfolk Transcription Archive)

Too bad there's not more on Jarys.....  :)

Sorry, that's "George, age 8" not George the Cool. It messed up a bit because I submitted after The Yokel made a reply, and I got a red message.

Nor_Fam,

Thank you for the extra information.  I had seen the 1881 Census but the Christenings and marriages were all new to me.  Got all those names and dates in Legacy now.

Regarding the two dates for Abel's marriage in IGI - 7th April as Abel, 22nd April as Able.

Was there any reference to birth/Christening of Abel's eldest son John PENTNEY, b abt 1898/99? I've got him as a Tallow Chandler, 52 in 1851 Census and 63 in 1861 Census, both say born Beetly (sic). Beetley is about 3 miles south of North Elmham.

I'm not sure about Lydia being daur of Abel and Mary.  I found the other siblings in IGI showing parents as Abel and Mary but not Lydia.  She's the only one you found as a 'born about' rather than a Christening so I wondered where you sourced her.  I did find a Lydia in IGI, born about 1813, North Elmham (not 1803) with husband James Wiseman and 6 children.

Regards, Sherwood.

Sherwood,

Glad you could use the info.

I didn't find anything for John's birth. I know he exists because he's in the censuses. I'm beginning to think that he may have been James Jary's uncle from another Pentney - such as a brother of Abel or something. It is strange that he was born Beetly when all the others were No. Elmham.

Lydia, who was christened 1803 was listed in the Norfolk Transcription Archive, not in the IGI. I thought it was strange because I had seen the name Lydia as James's wife in one census before seeing that name in the Archive.

The Archive had Mary of 1801 as "Mary POUNTNEY"

There are two burials listed in the Archive: one for William 1818 age 18mo; one for Mary in 1807 listed as "Infant". Both were Elmham North.

An interesting thing is that there was an Abel born about 1800 and it appears that he may also be a son of Abel and Mary. You can follow him through the censuses from 1841-1871, then there is a BMD for his death in 1874. He was a Licensed Hawker and never married, but his birth was the right place at the right time. And with the name Abel....

Do you know if Peter Pentney remarried between 1861 and 1881? In 61 he's listed with Mary Ann; in 81, there's a Peter of same age and birthplace married to Elizabeth. The census was "No. Wootton."

Regards,
Nor_Fam

(BTW, I tried to "modify" but it gave me an error, saying I should logout and log back in. Maybe it's my browser... and ... I misspelled Mary as Marry. Sorry.)

Nor_Fam,

Thanks again.  I hadn't realised that Peter PENTNEY had remarried until you pointed this out.  Further research has revealed:

Q4 1879 Peter PENTNEY m Elizabeth SHIPP, Kings Lynn

Elizabeth's first marriage was:

Q4 1849 Elizabeth BUXTON m Creak SHIPP, Freebridge, Lynn

Creak SHIPP is another case of recycling mother's name.  His parents were Edmund SHIPP and Elizabeth CREAK.

Strange website.  Just lost all that I'd typed...

New to this.

Eliza Pentney married John Green and lived in Nottingham.

Eliza's parents were indeed Peter Pentney and Mary Ann Jary.

Peter's parents were Abel and Mary (Thurston).

Strange coincidence, but backing up John Greens ancestry, in Norfolk, mainly around Hassingham, Beighton, Hockwold and Buckenham Ferry and latterly Kings Lynn, Back in 1749 a Mary Thurston aged 25, married John Green aged 22, 24th October 1749

Hi Sherwood,

I am looking at Burton Family in Norfolk.    In searching for one Peter Burton  I came a cross a death for a child in Langham, Norfolk  on the 17th October 1810.  Mother Elizabeth Pentney, The child was Ann Burton aged 9yrs, Peter's daughter.  The Transcripts also say "See Baptisms page 2" : but I cannot find that.

It's in the Norfolk, England, Transcriptions of Church of England Baptism, Marriage and Burial Registers, 1600-1935   Archdeacon Transcripts 1600-1812 -Langham.

Just posting as it may be of interest.

Kind regards Essnell
